My friend's Mk2 recovery transit

Postby malta transit » Mon Aug 18, 2008 11:40 pm

Very funnily enough , i have a friend whom i known a long time ago, and oddly enough we realized we own and like transits only till a few weeks ago. Mario Bonnello who is a local mechanic who has a garage in St Julians owns this Mk2 recovery van, He had bought it from UK over 20 years ago as a chassis cab, and kept the same livery as he had bought it except of adding his name [ maybe some one can tell us more about this van from its livery ]. He built the back body all by him self and that time there weren't many to copy from. I have never seen the van as it is hardly used, mainly to the mot , once every 2 years. These pictures are taken when the transit was ready from its recovery body. I remember we got on the transit subject as the new mot man wanted to see the chassis number and till now Mario has no clues were to find it stamped, so if somebody can help him find or were to look he will appreciate alot. Its one of the late Mk2's and has one of Fords latest York distributor engines, this is doubtfull if its the original engine as the engine number doesn't match the log book.

When does the mot man has uncovered all this?
Our pickup transit has a similar problem regarding engine number but his case about the chasis number can result in his van being taken by the police as they did to a single wheel transit in Bbugia. Better off if he garage it then let them to take it. There are many with this problem in Malta.

Hi its about the right time to say something on my friend's transit, as we needed it to recover my brother's MGB from the paint shop!!
Since the last post on this recovery transit it had an engine transplant, a DI engine which Mario says it feels lighter on the steering and pulls up a hill even on top gear.
Well ! here is our adventure ! a mix of my brother's mg and the Transit at work. Please note that it as a short wheel base model , very ideal for handling narrow maltese streets. Take note also of the fold out rear frame, how practical it is by leaving it short wheel base for a daily runabot.

Wednesday, 21st September. A public holiday. Me, my brother and Mario go to pick up the MG.

Mario hooks the mg with the transit's hand winch.

Now finaly there. The extra ramps are put beneath the car on each side.

Arrived home. The Transit in all its glory.

Adjustable Tyre rests.

My brother lifts of the extra detachable ramps, and puts them on the loading bay.

Mission acomplished !! Mario on the left, me in the middle and my brother on the right.
