Wood Burners...

Postby markyc » Fri Sep 16, 2011 4:52 pm

I'm about to start re-doing an ambulance camper conversion and would like to fit a small wood burning stove. Anyone fitted one in their van? Got any hints or tips? Thanks :)

Yes waste of time as you won't be accepted unless your going to get a dog on a bit of string , park in lay by's and hug trees.

I would have thought even a small stove is gonna generate too much heat. I've got a stove in my living room, you can't sit in front if you stoke it too much! They are very powerfull. Would need serious heat shielding all round it.
Sorry to be so negative :(

For the amount of space it'll take up because of the clearence you'd need, it's not really worthwhile, even though it would be a very cheap way of heating your van

You'd be aswell to fit a diesel night heater, you could even fit a 2nd tank and run it off red diesel

OR

buy a wooly hat

I'm only ever wildcamping, I have a woodburning stove which I use outside the van for sitting around and cooking on. You can stick the kettle on and fill a hot water bottle  :)

Thanks for the comments guys, I still like the idea of a wood burner but probably its not really practical! I didn't think I could fit a diesel heater because its a petrol ambulance but I hadn't thought of a second tank. Theres loads of room underneath and i'm guessing it wouldn't need to be very big.

If you have LPG for your cooker/fridge or whatever then you might want to think about a Propex heater rather than the diesel one, as they're cheaper and seem to be more reliable.

Go for it mate 8)

i'd love to put one in my county - but it wasn't necessary for west africa!

most trucks i've seen with them in, use a tiled floor or chequer plate. Check out the onlineshop on www.firecement.co.uk for insulating panels though, they do some nice thin board and various other heatproof equipment.
witches hats generally seem best for the top, but beware of where you put it (re: catching on branches)
bear in mind that the more flu in the van, the bigger the heating area.
also consider the condensation issues you may have, along with the need to supply fresh air also.

Are you making your own burner or buying one? i've seen a real good south african pot belly type stove, at an overland exhibition but i can't remember what it was called.

or build you van then piss off somewhere warm every winter!

(ps - ignore the scuzzy hippy comments, and let them be cold... but still upstanding members of society  )

I used to have a woodburner in a couple of caravans I used to own. They took up a bit of space and could get very warm, but when it's minus 10 outside,I was sure nice and toasty :D :D also machine mart woodburners are rated value for money amongst a few hippy travellers I know.
