I'm doing my timing on a mk6 2.4 rwd, i can see the crank sensor but am reluctant to remove it!!!

How on earth is it possible to reset the sensor back onto the dogtooth on the flywheel with the engine in the vehicle, any help on the procedure and if its possible? would be appreciated

the bolt that holds the sensor in doesnt do the adjustment


theres a carrier for the sensor bolted to the engine and the sensor bolts into this, if the carrier breaks then its box out to change it

no...carrier has a slot/elongated hole in it the bolt to hold sensor bolts thru this giving a little up and down movement
turn engine over until the there is a solid bit under sensor hole,,,get something like a corn flake box cut a liitle bit off fold in two place this on top of flywheel replace sensor push down slightly so it touches cardboard tighten up ..as soon as flywheel moves cardboad will be out of way.
typical airgap for sensor would be .020"-.050" on a tddi,
owing to different makes of sensors and or position of sensor carrier, this is a guide
when you start it up place your finger on top of sensor just to make sure it isnt touching flwheel (you will feel in clicking if it does)
if you decide to use a new one just do the same as tdci below


tdci would need a new sensor as its more critical and make there own air gap after sitting the sensor on top of flywheel it shaves the plastic end creating the correct gap

Never had any problems with gap on a Di engine, just whip it out do the job, then bung back in and tighten bolt. Always worked every time, no problem as gap is not critical on these engines.

However, if its a TdCi engine, then I always just fit a new sensor as its the only way to correctly set the gap, and yes, it is critical, you can stop a running engine fro starting simply by loosening then re tightening the sensor.

Sorry I know it's an old thread but on the tdci just push sensor right down towards the flywheel as far as it goes toughen up with a new sensor of course many thanks

It is indeed an old thread...near 14 years. You're better off starting a new one....new posts get lost in old threads.

The sensor is just a hall effect magnetic pick-up....normally I just push the sensor down till it "just" touches the flywheel teeth and it will then make it's own air gap.
