Belt tensioner!!

Hi guys, a quick question as im not sure what i should do? my vans a 2006 75ps T200 swb and its done 68k, the problem is my tensioner is squealing like a beeech, can i just replace it, or is worth while to get the timing belt done at the same time? as ive heard they dont need changing till 100-150k,, also could i do the tensioner myself??

seems to be the one at the top back of the engine not sure if its cam or aux , im not wanting to dig too deep if its needing a cam belt!

ive got a funny whirring sound when i rev the engine

its been bugging me for ages, i thought it may have been the turbo but it happens before the turbo kicks in like between 1800 onwards. someone told me it could be drivebelt tensioner but i dont know, any ideas?

I have the same problem.
I am having both belts and tensioner replaced tomorrow at my local garage for £70.00. (I supply the parts)
I would advise you to get it changed. Do not leave it as if the tensioner goes it could cost you a fortune to repair your engine.

If you remove the aux drivebelt then you can start the engine and see if the noise is still there, if it is then you know it's not the aux tensioner.

It could also be the cam belt tensioner which needs replacing ASAP otherwise you could ruin your engine if it fails.

BUT it also could be the bearing in your alternator, PAS pump od A/C pump (if you have A/C).

Whirring noise is a sign of a bearing which is ready to fail, get it checked out, i'd start with the aux drivebelt - take it off and see if the noise disappears.

Hi Guys, sorry ive taken ages to reply, my email updates seem to have stopped working.
Ok so i had a quote for a new aux belt, timing belt kit and tensioner @238.00 inc fitting which i thaught was OK, after loads of crap with the offending garage, i have 2 new belts and no new tensioner!! im actully on my 3rd aux belt as they never fitted the new one right and it chewd itself up on a bolt head on the side of the block!!, now as for the tensioner,the bad mechanic never changed it like i asked but the OK mech who put the 3rd aux belt on said it was dodgy and would cost £180 (inc fitting) to fix!
Im not too sure what one it is but if i open the bonnet, and look down the side i can only see the aux belt as the timing belt is covered and if i squirt a small amount of WD40 on the pullys it shuts up for a while,
its defanetly a bearing but now that *connect_4* has said of possible other bearings im a little unsure of what one it could be as i know the wd will be travelling round the belt!
Its only done 70k why the hell do ford make belts to last 150k but not the other parts in the sequence!

Is it a whirring noise or a slight squeek ?

I replaced my aux belt yesterday as it had a slight squeek, WD40 sprayed on it cured the squeek for a while as did yours so i knew it was the belt.

New belt and no more squeek.

If yours is a whirring sound then it must be the tensioner, its a pig of a job to do by the looks of things....

i'm going to get a new timing belt & tensioner anyway - done 145 k and ford advise to change it at 150k so wanna change it while i've still got the tiny amount of 5k left on it- not tha i wanna chance it :S

OK, UPDATE, mine is a squeak, its usually squeaky when i first start up but on the cold mornings there is no noise until i accelerate maybe 1500-2000 revs, once warmed up and desired squeak is constant, turning the steering wheel seems to stop the noise, until i stop moving the wheel, surely it cant still be my aux belt as that ones new,(as above post)? i think its the tensioner, but i wouldn't mind is someone could clarify this, i have heard the steering pump needs to come off to get it out so def a nasty job!

My power steering pump has made a strange noise since i got the van, its done over 100k and now the noise has changed from constant to a pulse and sounds like the pump is giving up the ghost shortly.

You "can" leave the pump hung in place but its difficult to get the tensioner bracket out! without unscrewing the studs and removing them. I left the studs in place and its not easy, had to lift the pump up high enough to slide the tensioner off the studs. Seemed a risk and i think if i do it again i would unscrew the studs that hold the tensioner bracket on

All you need is the belt off to have a feel at the pulleys.

I bet its the power steering pump as mine does very similar. A recon one can be bought for <£100.

Rite!, belt is off! easyer than i thaught, anyway-
I noticed today at lunchtime that the belt was sitting about 3/4mm to the inside of the tensioner, upon starting the van it jamp another few mil in the same direction, Lightbulb Moment! or so i thaught, its not running true with the tensioner therfore the belts running over it at an angle causing the squeal!, now ive taken the belt off ther is some sideways play in the tensioner but the shaft that the PS pully is on also moves in and out about 1.5mm all the others seem fine, or atleast no play and i cant hear anything wrong, i did notice the red markings on the belt (GATES) is worn off in the inside em side lol, i wonder if its rubbing off somthing when its idling but jumping back at higher rpm? or the opposite? saying that id of thaught if that were the case it would have broke by now as its all motorway driving i mainly do!

can anyone say how long itl roughly take to fit a new tensioner?

Did you get a new tensioner fitted in the end? If so did the belt still run off to one side???
