MK2 with a supercharged Mercedes diesel

Postby erling66 » Thu Jan 26, 2012 9:40 pm

Hi
Here are some info about my transit project. I hope it can be of interest for some even when it is not 100% Ford.
I saw a 1980 diesel transit for sale in the paper. I had been looking for a MK2 diesel for a few years, the only problem was that this car was 2000km away. The only photo in the ad was this:
Image
But I would not miss the opportunity so I called the guy, said I bought it without seeing it and asked for his account and transfered money. The transit was mine :D
2 months later I went to the north of Norway to pick it up.
Image
Shortest way back was trough Finland and Sweden. the trip up and down took me 6 days.
As you all know, the original diesel is not very fast so it had to go. My favorite engine is the Mercedes OM606 3L 6syl 24valve turbo 177hp diesel from w210 1997-2000 so I thought that the coolest van and the best engine would be a perfect match :) So I started the project

With a little cutting, the engine fit perfectly.

I will update the project when it progress.

The Transit looks great. Not much rust because of the salt/snow ?

Here are some update.
The engine I am using is a Mercedes OM606. the engine are an update from the OM603 from 1985-1994 with a 24 valve head and an electronically controlled mechanical pump. The engine are by many considered the best diesel engine mercedes have made. I don't like the computer controlled pump(I like diesel engines that can run without electricity) but fortunately the older mechanical pump fit. But the problem with those pumps are that they can only deliver fuel for ca 175hp so I have mounted larger elements in the pump. Now it can deliver fuel enough for ca 450hp :D But to burn that much fuel you need air, lots of air, so this summer I am going to put on a supercharger.
Image
It should take the engine to ca 250hp (with intercooler) later I have a plan to also fit a large turbo. That should bring the engine to 400+hp
I am putting on a 6 speed from a 2001 220cdi mercedes. It fits the engine but the axle is shorter so I had to shorten the housing
Image
here is the new transmission mound, it is my first alu weld but it became quite strong(I can jump on it) so I hope it will hold.
Image
I am working on the engine mounts now.
Thank you for welcoming me to this great site. There are lots of interesting info here. My car is made in Germany but i guess it is quite similar to the English Transit.
Yes the car has unusually little rust(we have a lot of that in Norway) I was very happy when I saw that since I bought it without seeing it :)
Maybe someone can help me to understand what all the codes on the plates mean? I am especially interested in Whats the name of the green color since I am planing to paint it in that color.

wow, amazing i love it!
i was just thinking to myself the other day about whether the W123 300D mercedes engine and trans would be a good swap into my van..

great idea.

I finished the propeller shaft:) I used some different Mercedes parts and one part from the transit propeller shaft and welded them together.

Then I installed a hydraulic clutch using mostly Mercedes w124 parts. It is soft and nice so I think it will work fine.
