Well that's only 50 miles away from me! The box alone would be worth £100, the seats again another £120, at least down south! I would go for it if I were you, if you wanted to come and collect it I could fetch it for you.
You know you want to....................

what you need is to find 86-88 mk3 2ltr petrol that will have the 5 speed erly type box in called type 9 if you can find one ,the box and the crossmember it will bolt streight in ! prop will also fit so you dont need to change that! but beware these gearboxes were not to clever! 1 alot of play in the gearstic,2 had a bad habit of jumping out of reverse! the best way is to look for a complete van you can drive! :)

We just usually use the front section, as it's usually for an XLWB in our case. You can cut & shut (weld) or seperate the two bit and join at the UJ

The 5 speed is a bolt up connection, and the 4 speed is a spline in, which is why we change the fron section of the prop.

ok were digressing(big word not really sure what it means) abit!!! :)
Im 95% sure the type9 5 speed is longer than the 4speed although the prop will fit on the same splined o/p shaft - so you will need to have the prop shortened!!
but if you use the mt75 5 speed (best box) the o/p shaft is totally different so you will need the mt75 prop (or at least the front end)

hope that dosent confuse more :D

You're not digressing as this is still on the topic of 5 speed conversion :)

That's what I said  As to shortening the prop, it's never been an issue for us as the conversions are usually on an XLB, so the front prop gets matched to a long rear piece, or we get a new prop made (had to go to some little mesters in Sheffield for the first 3, they wouldn't do them down south!
I'm not confused (now) but I had to read this twice!

Simgy, it's a good thing your camper is a panel, as we only have one petrol 5 speed, our panel van, all the rest are diesel 5 speed Lutons!

When i get a bit more time (new baby/new bedroom to make/ new website/ van to finish etc!!) ill write an article in "technical how to" on swapping a mk1/2 4 speed to mt75 5 speed with some pictures, parts list, costs etc :D
Cos i think this will be a very common question!! - and also a very worthwile job to do :D

If you want any pictures, we have a lot to choose from, 1 panel van and 5 chasis cabs (which would be the same as a coachbuilt camper)!!!

  !!!! I tend to take what I am given (sold!), but to be fair I have never had a really bad one. Is it me or are there differnt gear ratios? Sometimes when we change a box the van ends up a bit slower or faster, it's the only thing I can think of (like for like that is).
