2008 Transit Mk7 85PS in Moondust

Postby Kidman » Tue Feb 14, 2012 7:35 pm

Here it is, the official thread for my new van. Had it a little while now and slowly getting there. Spent some time today giving it a full machine polish, although this was done quickly by the dealer i purchased it from, some swirling and buffer trails remained, so i had to get this sorted before the sign writing gets fitted tomorrow.

So far i have done the following -

Genuine colour coded centre bumper section
Stainless tread plates for front bumper
Extreme Brilliance headlight bulbs
Osram Diadem indicator bulbs front and rear
Trend/LX wheeltrims
Complete body mouldings as per Trend spec
Genuine Transit carpet floormat
Remap by Vantuner to 115PS
Full service again despite this being done by the dealer i wanted to ensure it had been done properly!

Thats it so far, will uploaded pictures of the sign writing when its done, should look very smart.

Very tidy job, glad they didn't make the mistake of putting the signs on upside down like they did theirs

Small update. It was remapped but due to some hunting issues this had to be overwritten when the dealer did a PCM update with the latest software, it needed this anyway as it was the original version but the real reason for the hunting was never really traced as there were no codes, and after the update and a fuel filter change all was well, until a couple of weeks ago!

I had been driving it hard and noticed when i stopped that the idle was a bit more clattery and tinny than normal, again no codes, no drop in performance and ran fine otherwise?

Anyway it seemed to get better but the dodgy idle didnt go completely. It seems strange this only started again since i put Esso fuel in! The first time it had issues was when i used Tesco?! All inbetween i've been using mainly Shell and its been fine, lets not blame the fuel though..

Yesterday i ran the tank low, put a dose of Millers in and drove it as normal, for the first time since i've had it the visible smoke had dropped, which is odd as on and off, i've been using various injector cleaners since purchase.

It was due a EGR and inlet manifold clean so last night i stripped it all down and was most disapointed, it was very clean! The MAF sensor was already getting dirty again after just 3000 miles since the last clean, the manifold just had a film of soot, as opposed to being 50% blocked like my old Tddi was..

Likewise the EGR itself was in good shape and it was only the area where the MAF sits and the EGR pipe meet, where there was any build up of crap,

Put it all back this morning, took me 30 minutes, well i am a mechanic ;), i also disconnected the battery for an hour to reset the PCM adaptive parameters , gave it a 8 miles drive and its perfect now, idles like a new van, i didnt notice any smoke at all which is a big relief as its always been a bit excessive for a standard van.

I'll give it another couple of hundred miles and then get the map back on.

Fuel economy has been very good, its never dropped below 35mpg and regularly sits around 40mpg, it is a bit slow compared to what i'm used to though but its pleasant enough.

Last pics show the LED sidelights that were donated to me, matches better with the uprated headlight bulbs.

Really nice tidy van.A pleasure to read a report from a guy that has obviously had a few niggly problems.I appreciate that you were able to tackle most things yourself, but has got off their butt and sorted it instead of ranting on and on about it.

With that type of attitude, you and your business should do very well.

why not just unplug the egr,yeh the light will come on but it will be cleaner and wont wear the egr out.It may even run a bit sharper, mine did.
If you have an htc phone you can clear/read the codes with a bluetooth adaptor and a free program (£3 full) called torque.

There is nothing wrong with the EGR :? As the manifold was very clean after 63k, the only reason i would consider removing it, would be to improve performance and economy/emissions. Its very clean now so now point at the moment.

Had the pump and pilot learn done during the week, and the counters reset, OMG what a difference! Not just to stability of idle (which seemed good anyway) but to performance! I've been leaving it in 5th and letting it lug along, it even beat a new Sprinter last night! It's only 3mph down on my old remapped van on my private test track point which is impressive, as its still completely standard. Roll on the iMap next week!

Great to hear that i had the pump pilot and Egr delete done on good friday by Martyn and what a differnce :D Idles great no boging down or loads of black smoke
and the mpg has gone up from 27mpg to just over 28.5 mpg :D
If your getting the Imap i think martyn can add the egr delete soft ware through that

Yep already spoken about the EGR delete and he will disable this function on the new map for me. I was getting another 50-60 miles to a tank when it was mapped so looking forward to that!

A few changes.

First one is the C-Max wheel -

Fancy plates with orange to silver fade border.

And finally one you cannot see is the Vantuner Eco map. Its been on nearly a month now, i got the imap so i could add/change when i wanted and not worry about PCM updates, plus its handy for code reading.

The EGR is now disabled, i've got zero smoke, its as quick as my old van now, in fact it broke the old vans sliproad record by 2 mph last night! I run it on BP Ulimate which makes a big difference to performance, starting and smoothness, well worth the extra pennies, not had any idle issues since the EGR was disabled so it seems this was the cause of issues all along and its been a joy to drive since.

The aircon has now been regassed which i was very grateful for yesterday sitting on the M25 for two hours!

I've got some H4 Bi-xenons to fit over the weekend as the Halfords brilliance bulbs dont last very long, these will last for ever and perform better too.

Really pleased I got the Mk7, its a brilliant tool for the job and one I can rely upon now.
