mk3 front new leaf hanger too far back

Postby Twin Wheel Burning » Thu Jun 28, 2012 9:03 pm

Hi there, I have a 1991 twin wheel Mk 3 and I have had the front cross member and front leaf spring hangers replaced. Problem is, the front rear leaf spring hanger is pushed right back, the bump stop is out of line and the front end is bottoming out because I now have no "spring" in the front leafs  . I took it to my mate who did the work and he says that the new cross member and leaf spring hangers were put back the way they came off. It's not an option to cut the hangers back out e.t.c but I wonder if there is another way to put the problem right. I'm thinking a leaf spring 1 inch shorter would fix the problem but I don't know if this is a possibility or where I would get one. What I really want to know is if anyone has had the same issue and is there a way round this. Iv'e had my van for years now and I am very attached!! So, I would really appreciate anyone's advice.

Thanks in advance!! :D

If you made a spring 1" shorter its very unlikely to have the same spring rate as the longer one. I think your mate "owes" you to put it right, as he clearly hasn't. Assuming it wasn't like this before. I'm guessing he hasn't welded everything back correctly. But some photos would help. I'm also guessing if your spring is postioned further back than the other one, your axle must be trying to turn the van constantly in one direction or the other?

both springs and hangers are the same he said.

Does sound like they've been put on in the wrong place or you'd have noticed these same symptoms before they were done surely?

just to clarify, the front crossmember and front hangers were replaced, so the rear hangers are still in the same place as before?

Front hangers must have been put on too far forward then?

Yea sorry I originally read it as one side being done not the other.

Problem is, the front rear leaf spring hanger is pushed right back

I think he means the rear shackles not hangers are pushed right back, so would that not mean the front are welded too far back?

Yeh that's right sorry the rear shackles are pushed back over because the cross member and hangers seem to be welded on about an inch too far back. The lad that did the work for me seems to think there was no other way of welding them on wrong and said it may be because they are copy parts. Sometimes wish I could convert to coil springs for less hassle
Thanks for helping!!

I'll put some photo's on now

Yeh the springs were not replaced, just the front hangers and cross member. They were fine before the new metal was welded in.
