Split charge relay question

Postby smartie1984 » Fri Jul 13, 2012 2:47 pm

Hi all,
Been lurking about but have decided to ask a question/opinion.
We are converting our transit into a camper and was wondering if a 30AMP split charge relay would suffice to charge the battery when on the move? haven't got the battery yet, but thinking of 110Ah
It has 2 switched outputs and a permanent output. (also 2 inputs so I can run two thinner wires rather than one thick wire)
I would connect the battery to the switched output so it would only charge when volatage is high enough.

Thanks

WELCOME TO THE FORUM

Yes 30 amp would be fine,

We use them for the aux charging system for caravans when we fit the towbar, it has 2 switched outputs, 1 for fridge & 1 for battery charging just make sure you earth the relay to the chassis or body

Hi,
thanks for your reply.
So I think I've sorted out how to wire it up.
As the starter battery is pretty full up with leads I thought I could connect to start motor...would this work?

Hi, if you go on flea bay there are a number of auto battery isolaters, got one for mine and is perfect for job, ( I run a couple of 12v motors in the back during work) even has a switch to connect 2nd batt'y in to start engine when 1st is flat
You can go as fast as you want on a push bike

That works, but you have missed the input to the relay for switching it!

Hi,
Thanks for the replies.

It's a self switching relay, so I thought that means it will switch to charge battery/turn on fridge when voltage is high enough?
This is what it looks like IIRC

That would be ok but you don't have to go to the extreme of wiring to starter for 30amp draw, a spare terminal in the fuse box should be fine

I would advise against making your connection at the starter, either go to the battery directly, or spur from the fuse box
