mess vans

Postby pembrokeben » Mon Aug 20, 2012 12:28 pm

Hi guys,
I am hoping to get a transit MWB hightop to convert to a camper and was wondering how you rate using a mess van for this. I was thinking that the benefits would be the windows in place and the 240 electrics etc but am concerned that the likelihood of being used for lots of short journey may mean more engine ware. We are looking to spend around £5000 and want the van to last.
Any ideas or advice would be much appreciated.
Thanks Ben

Most Mess vans will have not been treated well. as they say theres nothing faster than a network rail van lol, but you just have to make that judgement at the time.

I've had mine 18months now, the benefits are the windows in place, good heavy duty electrics to work with, and some useful kit such as night heater, microwave etc, and the rest you can either use or sell on.

Agree with AK. I spent a few months removing the interior of my ex Network Rail van - they might as well have used a welder to fit the stuff. I was able to keep the 12v electrics as a starting block and sold off the Microwave for £150, the Handiwash sink for £40 and the hot water heater for £20.

I've not had any mechanical hiccups since owning, though the radiator fan was missing. Nearly completed my camper (nearly)
