It was actually put together by a marine engineer! just not painted, and the following explains how......and why it can be.....
Put any engine in a boat in the sea and after 6 mths the paint job will be your last worry!
All the marine versions start as a "van" engine and nearly never from a new block, it is widely advised and done by all the "proffesional" marine engine suppliers, they sell kits and advice specifically to do this!.
Some marine engines need conversions of more internal parts like reprofiled cams etc but not most diesels, especially the fords thats why I like to use them, I am a ford man at heart having had escorts, cortinas etc all my life and would easily be capable of ripping out my boat engine swapping all the "marine parts" and fitting it back in shuld it fail/blow up.
The original (been told/ believe) builder and in esence, originator of the 2.5tdi intercooled 130 version was Lanecing marine, a reputable uk company. Many have converted this block but not many did the 130bhp, they are widely used right from being rated as 55hp upto 130hp in boats, this is why I had questions originally and contacted this forum (see my first post).
I contacted Lancing but they are very guarded (understandable, it's their living after all) about what they actually do to an engine to get 130 other than it is intercooled, has the standard marine bits like raw water pump, heat exchanger, and some wierd piping etc AND A BIGGER turbo, when I asked what turbo they would not tell me and only said NO STANDARD tranny one would do, "it has to be bigger" this is why I decided to buy a proven engine (used) and then rebuild it myself. I have fitted my own turbo following many, many, many hours of research (and favours from a parts supplier) and have now settled on an Iveco 2.8TDi version which is used on engines from 146 - 166 bhp, and it IS noticably bigger! I have also stripped it first to block the wastegate closed, this is specifically for a boat only.
All I can tell ALL of you so far is this:
If you fit an intercooler the same as mine, Bowman, however this is seawater cooled (could be fitted with a seperate rad in your van) you would need this version (3 week delivery @ £270 built to order) fit a Bosch pump highest spec, Blue or even better yellow injectors, remove all the gadgets like sensors etc, fit a BIGGER turbo and (this is the difficult bit) cut your exhaust down to 3ft long with no boxes, yes 3ft straight through! then I see no reason whatsoever why you can not get 130bhp or probably much more (when I crank up the pump in all the places, thanks much to razaman for his help on this) when the pump mods are done.
I have found NO evidence of anything, from anyone that suggests there is anything internal that is changed!
I will be posting pictures of the actual engine finished very soon - and I have still not painted the block, only the bolt on bits, cos in a year it would look the same!
I would be seriously interested in helping someone do this in a van to see what we could get - let me know if you are interested?
