will turbo pressure increase after a remap?

Postby westers » Sun Sep 09, 2012 10:35 pm

have a 90 connect and want to fit a boost guage ( just for looks  ) only problem is i want to get a re-map in the near future, and want to know if the boost pressure increases after?

not sure weather to get a 20psi or a 30psi gauge

apparently a standard 90 connect runs at 17psi, (quote from dub-77) which leads me to the 20psi but unsure if the turbo pressure increases after a re-map making me need a 30 psi gauge ?

i basicaly just dont want waisted glauge  whats the point of having a 30, if its only ever going to reach 17?

cheers, Lee

No your boost pressure is controlled by the actuator on the turbo. I bought a 2bar gauge and at full boost it will sit just over 1bar of pressure. So a 20psi gauge will do you fine I think.

Mine seems to spike at 20psi anyways. Well that's what I was finding with my manual boost controller.

I tried fitting a boost controller and it wouldn't boost properly so took it off in the end.

If you're intending to fit one westers then the choice is yours as to which gauge to get.

my gauge hits 28 psi! got a boost controller on it to it seems to boost more in 5th gear than any other gear as well.

i thought alot of people had problems with boost gauges? ... might be my imagenation

just sent some guy an email about a 20 psi one, but i think it might be best to get a 30, have any of you got pictures of where you fitted them? ive seen a few fitted in the air vent which looks wicked! im unsure how to fit it there thought?

Speaking in general terms, a remap will almost always increase boost pressure. That's where the power increase is coming from. Ask the person doing the map what their map will have for maximum boost and then buy a gauge with a little extra range from that number so you will be able to identify boost issues should they occur.

I asked vantuner before the remap about what was involved and the boost pressure wasn't touched. Just the fuelling and timing.

I guess it depends on what type of tuning you are getting. If it is meant to smooth out power delivery and increase economy, no boost increase makes sense. :D

Nope I've got more power too. He reckons at least a 20bhp increase if not more :)

Ah, you're right mate. I am thinking petrol turbo tuning where a performance tune is almost always going to require more boost for a performance increase. With a diesel, there is a much wider "safe" AF range and you can get a bump in power by adding fuel only.
