Wooden rear doors?

Postby pictishpunkgirl » Tue Dec 19, 2006 6:08 pm

OK - sick to death of rusty, expensive rear doors for LWB hi top. Any reason why we can't put in wooden doors with perhaps a caravan window inserted?

OK, we'll clad them then. :D

P.S. In reply to your question a couple of days ago - they're 6 stud wheels & heavy duty tyres. Is that good?

With you on that one, would look really shite. Anyway what you would loose in rust you would gain in dry rot!

You can get repair panels at a reasonable price

A good body shop will make an invisible repair

Then before you put the rubber trim back, use loads and loads of underseal/waxoyl :D That should outlast the rest of the van :!:

Not even with leaded windows, shutters, a window box etc on the back?

OK, here's the problem. The fumes come in & make everything black in the van. The doors we have a rusty in various places (hanging off in fact) & Smooth Hound's welding looks like his grandma knitted the back door. It would be far easier to have it filled in with smooth ply sprayed the same colour as the van cos it'd be cheaper than replacing or repairing what we have. It'd look shite for a Transit but maybe quite nice for a camper? Not convinced?

Its all down to personal taste really, if like that style then go for it  May look better if you was to trim the rest of your camper round the sides or something so it all the wood blends in  It isnt something i would go for but i have seen many a van trimmed in wood over the years and they look nice but wouldnt want a van like that myself, which is why i say its down to individual taste.

No amount of paint will blend a wooden door to a metal body. It will still look odd.

would look fine on a hippy van.save a bit on weight too and make van quicker :)
have seen a few with caravan style doors all blended in a look ok but limit the access for big stuff.
the trick to getting hightop doors to last is getting a decent set in the first place.
my vans had two sets in 8 years and im pretty good at fixing them but in the end they just fall to pieces or come off in your hand :!:

That's OK it being a hippy van, having had a 40 ft coach with a rainbow on the side, rear stable doors & a porch on the back, I don't mind my transit looking odd. It won't be meant to look like real doors - don't know if i'll do it but finances might dictate a cheap option. :(

Used to go to festivals that Jeeves was connected with (Clunie Dam, Rossiemuir etc), Cramond Island and all the punx picnics in Edinburgh, but not to anything with rave ( big sorry to anyone who's into it, it's just that i'm not  ).

The posts I made in the thread on Gypsies in Non Transit talk sum up my lifestyle.

So where are you and are you into festivals yourself? Is your m8's van near Aberdeenshire? I'd be interested in seeing what he/she has done. Any pics?

I have a roller door on th back of mine!
Came with it, result.
Not convinced with wood though
How about a big piece of steel welded over the lot?
Might look better than wood
Or, you could fit a piece of ply on the inside!
In a MK6 280 SWB semi hi!!!!
There you go! At last!
