Mk5 Clutch

Postby IgorVigor » Mon Aug 27, 2012 4:39 pm

Right, I have a clutch slipping issue

Its a Mk5 SWB 2.5Di fitted with a turbo, 100ps injectors and tuned considerably
So its a MT75 box :)

Now, its done around 70,000 miles, but it lived in a city for most of its life, so the clutch has had a lot of use....
I've adjusted it again, but its definitely in need of replacement now (the extra power has probably finished it off  )

Now then, I will be fitting a turbo clutch instead of the N/A clutch
and it will be a complete kit (pressure plate, friction plate and release bearing)

However, before I order a clutch kit, I want to ask you all about something in the back of my mind.....
Were there 2 sizes of clutch available?

I seem to remember something about the standard being 245mm, but there was a bigger, heavier duty 267mm clutch :?

Heavier duty clutch would be useful considering the state of tune   8)

You can fit one if you have a Turbo Flywheel

All the standard flywheels I have seen have the holes drilled and tapped for the bigger and smaller clutches.

In fact, if you are desperate to see I can take pics of 2 easily (one from a '95 70PS and one from a '00 76PS)

Some aftermarket companies only list the small ones.

I know LuK do both and they are the company that manufacture ford/motorcraft clutches

I'd like to see the flywheel pics if possible :)
Are there larger dowels and bolts for them?
Getting different bolts could be expensive (unless standard bzp 8.8s are ok)

Borg and Beck do both sizes of clutch it seems :)

I have done a little reading and it says the hd clutch uses 10mm rather than 8mm bolts.....
Thats all :P

I'll try and have a look at my flywheel tomorrow as well.....mighy have the second holes :P

I don't *think* the bolts are the same... The small one is definately M8, I think the larger one is M10 (but I may well be wrong).

The 3 flywheels I have seen have all been drilled & tapped for both clutch types - but obviously the dowels are in the correct place for the clutch type fitted, not the other sort!

A quick search has brought this one up... drilled for both

Borg & Beck is now part of another company - I can't remember which but I think it is LuK. Bolts are boggo 8.8s

First Line ltd own Borg and Beck, LuK are a german company, who first showed up here in the late 80s and their clutches were some of the worst I have ever had the misfortune to fit, two out of three wouldnt work properly and their budget line were remanufactured! driven and pressure plates. They appearto have moved on from then but I still would fit Valeo or B&B in preference anytime. The heavy duty LuK is just over twice the price of the std unit ( around £180 ish) if you need it and if you go to the B&B website they have a database with all info available there.

I thought Delphi owned Borg and Beck :?

I've bought a Borg and Beck turbo clutch (standard 242mm size)
The standard clutch put up with the power happily even towards the end of its life :)

Perhaps one day if more power is pushed out of the engine, I'll fit the bigger clutch (if the standard one can't cope)

They did, AP owned it, they were sold to a management company who in 1999 sold AP to a venture capital company who asset stripped it then in 2000 sold the majority of the business to Delphi and B&B to First ine in the uk, Delphi didnt want it. Now Delphi is going under too ( must be all those Epic pumps  ), so you have potted history. Good thing is First Line have invested in B&B and are very proud of their history and quality, so they seem to have a future. I would have tthought the std Td one should cope and a saving of over £90 too and lets face it they are dead easy to do so if it does give up the ghost eventually at least your in pocket. :D

I hate doing the clutch on a transit  having said that its easier than my focus!

Incidently a motorcraft one with LuK stampings came out - and an LuK one went back in (identical other than the motorcraft paint/numbers)
