When you say dissconnect the EGR I guess you mean dissconnect and then jam it open, well this may give you a slight increase on performance but probably not noticable but there will be a heavy increase in fuel usage and also it will not pass an emissions test meaning MOT failer and at the worst if you get pulled by the ministry you could be stuffed.

Your best bet is to ensure the correct adjustment of it and then leave it alone!

im not disagreeing with mrmpuk but,............................. my mate (BobS on the forum) disconnceted his EGR took out the valve and blanked it off on the top of the manifold, and found it to run better!

but that was a 98 engine in a pre 78 camper so emmisions isnt a problem!!

all you need to do to 'disconnect' egr is : - remove vac pipes from manifold to egr, bung rubber connectors with M6 bolts, remove rod from fuel pump to butterfly valve in front of egr, cable tie butterfly valve open, job done! the little pipe connectors that push into rubber connectors on egr and manifold become brittle and take some getting out, but this said it should only take 15 mins to do the job. result? more responsive cleaner exhaust and better mpg. good luck

Just so I know, where would I find this? We have Mk2s with later (90s) DIs, so I don't know if the EGRs are fitted along with the engines.

as for mot. mine passed spot on. ever see trannys blowing loads of black smoke under load? its cos the poor things are having to burn there own gasses. not a very good way of combating excesive exhaust emmisions. very crude way of getting through a specific test for homolgation purposes. not good for every day ownership of what is a nice old fashioned engine

follow pipe from exhuast manifold up to imlet manifold, in between the two is a unit with for vac pipes fitted to it. no need to remove the valve or blank it off it works via minimal vacuum in the inlet manifold

Thanks for the replies ,will give this a try as I dont see what benefit an engine can get from breathing in its own exhaust gases ,having had a glance up the inlet manifold and seen the oily mess in there

correct! i took the manifold off of my tranny and left it soaking in jizer for a week it was an absolute nighmare to get clean. i also used a scrapper and a hoover to fetch the worst of the crap out of then inlet ports, when it went back together it was minus egr and i also routed oil filler cap into a plastic bottle and bunged up inlet manifold end of breather. emmisions regs are a bit more open to interpritation in uk. if we lived in calfornia i would probably have been run out of town by now!

 Just a word of warning. :?: Mate of mine got stoped by ministry other day, Ministry man wasnt happy that the egr and pipe from ex manifold had been disconected etc ( he has an L reg tranny pick up) (my mate not ministry man) told him to get an emmisions check. As MOT was due in sept he put it through a full mot, passed with no probs inc emissions we spent couple of hours at weekend putting linkage & pipe back on leaving butterfly out and pipe blocked up so if he gets stopped again it all looks like it should under bonnet.

I have blanked off my egr, a mechanic told me to just get a thin piece of metal, cut it to size, drill a couple of holes and put it between exhaust manifold and egr pipe. I have done this. What about butterfly valve then, If you take the rubber air filter pipe off the inlet on the top of the engine, is it the big one that is exposed? Do I need to disconnect this as well?

take off inlet pipe, remove operating rod from injector pump to butterfly valve, open valve to 90 degrees relative to closed position, cable tie in place, refit pipe happy motoring, there realy is no need to make a blanking plate for the egr as it works of the partial vacuum i the inlet manifold, so blanking off pipes will be quicker and easier

Re: disconnect egr

Sorry to drag up this old subject,
but I've been meaning to do this for ages,
and need to clarify...

If I blank the vacuum pipe with a ball bearing (so it looks std)
and remove the butterfly,
will that do the job?
