Overheating

Postby k w r s » Sat May 12, 2007 2:40 pm

Yesterday the engine suddenly cut out, it re-started, then cut out again. Recovery company came out and suggested thermostat was the problem. Changed this but the problem persists. I have spoken to Ford dealer this am and they have said that the problem could be water pump. Has anybody had similar problems ? Could the system need bleeding, could there be a air lock? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated - new member and 1st posting- great site.

water pump drive splines will be corroded I think :(

The pump is driven off the back of the power steering pump, so you'll not always get visible signs of a problem.

A good way to check it is.....

from a cold engine, run the engine at half throttle for about 5 mins.........the outcome is apparent :D

glow plug light flashes, engine shuts down with temp gauge in red.....lots of bubbling noises in hoses etc.

new power steering pump and water pump required.

Thanks for your reply - will try that in the morning. One other thing I forgot to mention is that when the engine has been running a while, if I put the heater on there is no heat in the cab at all - would this confirm your suggestions ? Is the system self-bleeding ?

Heater doesn't get hot because the water isn't being circulated. Try what Nighthawk has said above.

Thanks MrMpuk, will do (although glow plug doesn't light up) - I think I should have kept my smiley 95 tipper that I had for 8 years and hardly spent anything on it ...... I've also replaced fuel pump in the 6 months that I have had it !!!

Thanks Nighthawk and MrMpuk- I have done what you suggested and it did exactly as you said except for the glow plug lighting up so it seems I am off to Ford's in the morning for water pump and power steering pump -hopefully not costing too much or the missus will be off with the milkman. Thanks for the advice - cheers !!

Does the glow plug light work when you start the van?

Yes, it lights up when you put the key in the ignition and start it as usual, but doesn't come on when it heats up ....does that fit in with your thinking ????? Miss my 190 tipper big time...

keep getting it red hot and the MIl should come on and store a code for a request for reduced fueling ;)

I hope you have a large amount of cash in your wallet because Mr P Artsman is going to empty it of the best part of £300 for the power steering and water pumps.

Thanks Thunderider, I'm going through the motions of checking every last little thing before parting with too much folding, it's hard enough earning a living as a roofer in the depths of cornwall when it doesn't stop raining...wish I had my 190 tipper back will keep you lot posted.
