Turbo Removal

Postby Barryd070 » Wed May 25, 2016 8:08 pm

hi guys.
Ive just today started to get a squeal from my turbo on my 53 plate connect, 1.8 tdci 75ps. After speaking to a guy at a garage he has suggested that the turbo will need replacing. Ive never done one before and was wondering if anyone knows of any walk through kind of guides with photos or maybe a video? I need to get it off before i can get a replacement as i will need the part number ive been told.? really appreciate any help that anyone can give or any points to the right direction.

Cheers

I've been chasing a squeal for a year soon, on and off. I too thought it was the turbo but I'm convinced that it's not, I believe it's a gasket leak somewhere but there is a lot of places that can leak. It's pretty common for the boost pipes to leak too, a small leak will squeal but a bigger leak makes more of a hissing sound.
A week ago I had it narrowed down to a leaking manifold gasket but then I noticed that there is a third gasket on the EGR cooler, I only saw the ones on the ends before.

Now I want to check that before I remove the manifolds but can't seem to find the time to do it, I don't know how to get to it either, it's pretty tight back there.

Hi, when the turbo starts spinning(the harder I put my foot down) the louder it gets. I've been told this is the fan blades catching inside and renewal is the only way forward. So looking at any help with removal.

Thanks
Barry

Hi, I've noticed the pipe from air box to turbo has a split in it. Would this cause the turbo to wine really loud when accelerateing? I know that there is a danger of something going in and getting into the turbo and causing damage. I've stripped all pipes down tonight and re fitted them all and noticed the split in the air box one. I've had a quote of £100 to fit the new turbo from my local garage. I've obviously got to replace the pipe. But would you suggest putting it on before the replacement and seeing if it makes a difference ?

Cheers

You get at it from the top, and whilst it's awkward to get at, you don't need any special tools to replace the turbo.
Small hands are an advantage (which I didn't have) and a selection of short-ish spanners/sockets of all types will help to access the awkward to get at bolts and nuts.

£100 at garage labour rates seems reasonable, but you can save that if you don't mind getting your hands dirty (and scraped!)

I would still check or replace those boost pipes before you change the turbo though

The split intake pipe is more likely to be the cause of the sound than the turbo.
