condensation inside van!!

Postby kevinpower » Tue Jan 17, 2006 11:14 pm

Hi Guys! I have got a L plate transit swb semi high top transit, can anyone tell me if there is an easy solution to condensation on the inside roof of the load area, it is becoming very frustrating as it drips all over my equipement and when its frosty it freezes and makes it colder inside the van than the outside temp, many thanks for any advice,

cheers Kevin

:D Hi Kevin i had this problem, as it froze up inside and dripped on the kids ,and suffered from condensation as well, i fitted light hardboard to the roof the same stuff you would but on a wardrobe back, stuck some light cord carpet on with spray glue ,job done or you could put a minibus head linning in,hope this helps best wishes Billy :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

As Bill said, cord carpet glued on works. Ours is glued directly onto the whole interior & never gets damp.

ive been thinkng of putting a small 30-40mm chip cooler fan from my old pentium 2 in my van with a timer so that it runs for say an hour after you leave the van so it changes the air in the van to get rid of the moisture and heat ,then condensation should not be a problem and a small fan will not kill the battery much if at all

insulation is the only real answer, so sticking carpet to the pannel will help most :)

It will stay warmer in winter/cooler in summer too :)

That condensation is a real pain, especially with a sore head in the morning when waking up after a nite out! I got the interior out of a bus for my mk3, headlining, side trim, floor mat, the lot, made it much easier to live with. You need not go to all this trouble, the headling on its own would do, or just screw some light ply up to the roof crossmembers to cover the roof. I've also seen sheets of polystyrene glued to roofs.
My Transit...1.5 tonnes of pure fun!

Hate to be boring, but be careful what you stick to the roof or anywhere else in the van, isn't a fire risk I would go with the type of underlay designed for offices. You can get it from commercial carpet supplyers, it's a kind of black foam and when I tried to burn a sample it just wouldn't make a flame. The commercial stuff is much more stritcly regulated and complies to heavy fire regulations.

lol ..... heres what i am going to be doing

replacing the original hardboard roof liner with similar thin stuff, but use thin (2-3") loft insulation above it, this should be fire retardant :)

spray the inside of the side panels with a nice thick coat of underseal, then panel with ally, i might use left over loft insulation in there

straight forward wood flooring

and as an added bonus .... fletner ventilator on the roof

:)

I've just read this and had a thought, the stuff that gets used as underlay for laminate floor should work well, providing you can stick it to the steel. No Nails type stuff would do it methinks. If that's no good you can get 8x4s of foam from decent builders merchants, for about a £8, one inch thick
Hope this helps

Not such a rubbish suggestion - a small potbelly stove wouldn't be too heavy. We had a big stove in a coach which was great but scared the pants off other drivers when sparks came out the chimney while we were going!
