Auto box.

Just looking for a little clarity here peeps

Am I right in thinking that you check the automatic box oil level with the engine running? Every other auto I have come accross was done that way but I have never even worked on a Transit Auto never mind owned one!

same box that was in my heap o shite scorpio cosworth Kev. Yeah running in N after a minute ot 2 i think.

write this is my department beeing as i have done it 100 times or more !
move the selector thruo all the gears for around 2 mins the with engine running select park, then check you oil ,this will tell you ,also when you have been for a run and the van is warm you can do the same again! i think it would be a A4ld you have fitted so lets keep our fingercrossed it will be a good one mate!

Cant go through the gears.....havnt got a propshaft Yet! But will bear that in mind when i do

Do you happen to know if there is a propshaft for the SWB Auto? or is it a case of make it myself?

Well I can only go on what Billy said at the mo, and that was that it responded properly, which I assume means going up and down the gears correctly and not jumping from one to another at cruising speeds, once I get a prop sorted I will let you all know

I am gona ring Ford in the morning to see if theres a SWB Prop for it, its pointless asking for a second hand one cos they are like the proverbial 'rocking horse $'ite'.

If Ford don't do a prop, or expensive, there's Dez Shalley shafts in Wolves will make one, or Recoprop by Kidderminster. Not ridiculously expensive either

Another slight problem for you...


The auto box works quite well and is pretty smooth.....through the first three gears that is! No matter what I do I cant get it to drop into 4th, is there supposed to be some wiring that goes to the bottom of the stick? or should it just drop in automatically?

The details I can get on this box are very sketchy at best..

Is fourth an overdrive? Can I put a switch on the dash to make it change into 4th?

I Drove about 15miles down the A52 yesterday and it was revving its head off at about 65mph.....round town I wouldnt expect it to be in top gear but on a run there must be something I can do!

mate you need to go to a gearbox place, it should automaticly drop into top as you drive along ,unless you have the stick in 3rd, if all the othergears are nice and good and work well then it hopefully isnt to much wrong,there is a thing on the side of the gearbox this is something to do with the vacum ,on the di auto later ones this is eletric , but it maybe this part thats wrong! they are so nice when they are working ,but a pain when they are not!

mate if not give your local autobox man a ring most of them know what they are talking about! when mine was playing up when it was cold they all said the same thing! i did loose top gear for a wile, i gave it a oil change and then it came back! i once owned a 2ltr auto minibus ,that was a strange one ,if you jet washed it ,then went to go anywere it had no drive for around 1 hour, everything was working but just would not go ,let it dry out and it was away! its such a shame as if ford made a good box it would be a real pleshure to drive! when i had the rover v8 i just got a old gearbox slung it in and it was perfect!
