Later (1995 on) dashboard conversion to Mk3/Mk4

Postby Bryan » Fri Jun 16, 2006 11:02 am

I have recently completed this conversion on my MK4 from the boring old dated black dashboard to the newer grey 1995-on type dash.

The newer clocks have two connectors which you will need to install the clocks into the mk3. One connector has 16 terminals (A connector) and the other has 10 terminals (B connector). You need to connect these connectors to the existing wiring in your MK3 dash according to the table below:

Here's the wiring you need to alter to fit the new clocks:

Connection - Function - Colour (Mk3/Mk4 wiring)
on 95 on
A16 - Interior Illumination (+12v) - Slate/Green (C3/2)
A15 - LH Indicator - Black/White (from indicator switch)
A14 - RH Indicator - Bleck/Green (from indicator switch)
A13 - Earth - Brown
A12 - Main beam - White/Black (C2/9)
A11 - Not used
A10 - Alternator - Blue (C3/8)
A09 - Ignition Relay - +12v from ignition switch
A08 - Tachograph - Not needed in my case
A07 - Earth - Brown
A06 - Water temp sensor - Red/White (C3/10)
A05 - Airbag - Not used on mine
A04 - Water in fuel sensor - Brown/Orange (C2/3)
A03 - Manifold Heater - Black/Brown (C2/1)
A02 - Engine control unit - Orange (C2/4)
A01 - Ignition Relay - +12V from ignition switch

B01 - Oil pressure - Brown/Green (C3/6)
B02 - ABS - Not needed on mine
B03 - Brake Fluid Sensor - Brown/Green (C3/13)
B04 - Earth - Brown
B05 - Ignition Relay - +12V from ignition switch
B06 - Airbag - Not used
B07 - Fuel Gauge - Blue/Black (C3/4)
B08 - Not used
B09 - Rear fog light - +12V from fog light switch
B10 - Not used

I will add some more useful information to this post when I get a chance.

The MK3 has two connectors from the clocks as well, one is the C2 connector and one is the C3 connector. I can't remember which one is which but one of the connectors connects to the back of the dials and the other connects to the small display panel below the instruments.

You'll be able to figure out C2 & C3 when you take the clocks out and check the wire colours/number of wires on each connector.

It's easy enough to do.

Found a couple of small problems.

The diesel rev counter dont work. thats now sorted :D

The fuel guage goes straight to full when side lights are on :?

Other than that its all good :D

Any help on the fuel guage is appreciated. only thing i have done to stop it is pull the illumination wire out  not good for MOT or in the dark

can you trace back the tracks on the printed circuit to see why - a stragetically placed diode may be all thats needed

I think that could be the problem. i Have traced the fuel guage back to the plug and one terminal from the guage is connected to the illumination earth

So a diode it is  any ideas how to join it in

If you can wait till Monday I will scan the wiring diagrams and it'll all make sense regarding the diodes.
