My diffrent Transit mk4-6 project

Postby dieselman25 » Sat May 14, 2011 11:07 pm

this is my mk4 transit as it was when i got it

Image

it was starting too look a bit tired an old an a few bits of rust were starting to appear at the bottem of both front wings an at the bottem of the doors on the outter seals so it was time too start to do something about it before it got to bad,
i did want to make the transit look like brand new but i was not able to get hold of all the part at a senseable price so i had to settle for the mk6 front end which the parts are a lot cheaper and easyer 2 get hold of.
so i started by takeing the old parts of an offering then new ones up an trying 2 get them all to line up an look right

Image
Image
Image

i did hav to do a little bit a cutting too get the new parts to sit where they should

Image
i had too cut the old light mounting brackets out so the front of the van was at the height of the top of the inner wheel arches, then next step was to mount the bonnet an so i could work out how far a way the front pannel had to be mounted, the bonnnet uses the original bonnet hinges but i had to swap the hinges over from left to right so the bolt holes were further apart then the holes had 2 b elonggated slight. but it bolts on then i could get the front pannel in the right place along with both front wings it was a bit fidley at first trying to get the wings in the right place.

Image

the front of the transit looks all done but in reality i still hadd a lot more work to do!!
both front wings needed to be cut down and welded to the end of the old wings in the right place

Image
Image

once the wings had bin welded in place the job of blending then into the old ones so the lines in the body that go though the doors were kept, also the bottem of the wheel arches had to be moddified so the line of the wheel arch lined up with the front bumper, a little bit of fiberglass was used to make the angles an make sure the body filler had somthing toadder to

once all the rubbing down was finished on the wings the hole cab got a rub down ready for primer

Image
Image

then the hole cab got a new coat of nice bright white paint,
once the new paint haded dryed i could get on with the small amount of wiring that needed doing to get all of the lights to work propperly
the new wing indicator lights were wired in an then also wiresd to the side lights,
the headlightas an side lights were a bit easyer you just need to have the connector plug for the back of the light an conect up the correct wires

Image

the only parts i had left to fit were the new shape ( mk 6-7 ) wing mirrors which u need to take the new lights a part being very carefully not 2 brake them, they fit too the transit using the original mounting brackets the main diffrence is the mk4 the mirrors are on the doors and the new ones fit to the wings, the new mirrors make a massive diffrence both with the looks of the van an because the mirror has the wide angle bit on the bottem of them,

this is the spot the differnce compition between my mk4-6 an a mk6

WOW... thats one hell of a conversion...

i thought the most that people did with mk.3s and mk.4s was make them look more like a mk.5... jumping to a mk.6 is... way out there..

but very well done... nice to see it can be done...

i know its rude to ask.. but what sort of £££ did the conversion cost....?
