You are obviously going to a lot of trouble over this and so I can't stress enough how important the final hurdle is... As I said before "ask him to vac the system out properly first (VITAL)". If you don't get the air and moisture out of the completed and otherwise gas-tight system, then you will be frustratingly plagued with on-going and expensive problems. (Sorry Andy) but he has got to get the system properly evacuated before putting the gas in.
Please don't think I am being negative here, I'm a professional and I just want to make sure the kit works for you.

 No problem there mate :!:
I wasn't going to connect him to my oven :!:     )

My MOT place has just got one of those aircon machines in, but I doubt they know what vacuuming is
Do you trust a newbie at this critical stage :?:

Hi MadMark,

Never seen under the bonnet of a Mk6. Check over the pipework route to see if you have a sightglass. If you have, the glass should be full (clear and appear empty) if fully charged. Bubbles in the glass indicate shortage.
If no sight glass, get hold of a reasonably accurate thermometer, wedge the sensor into the central duct and drive a mile or so. With the fan speed on medium the air off temperature should read between 6 and 14 degrees C. Higher than this and you may well have a problem.

I wouldn't normally suggest this, but as you guys are all shall we say 'capable' and trustworthy with high pressure gas, buy a one off 1 Kg disposable can of R134a. This comes complete with short hose and connector to hook up. Make sure you inject liquid into the system, and don't just put it all in, your system won't need 1Kg even if completely empty, just monitor progress, you can always reconnect if not enough.

Where to get it? Milton Keynes Hmmm not sure, do a google for your nearest HRP Ltd, NRS (Natiowide Refrigeration Spares), or other Commercial Refrigeration Spares Wholesaler. Failing all else http://www.hotfrost.co.uk/products/hotsec07.pdf About £28.
