Transit drum:

Drum Diameter 254.0mm
Maximum diameter 255.5mm
Drum width 57.5mm
Outside diameter 292.0mm
Overall height 96.0mm

Transporter

Mountings 5
Drum Diameter 252.0mm
Maximum diameter 253.5mm
Drum width 64.0mm
Outside diameter 286.0mm
Overall height 78.0mm

So.... VW drum is 2mm less in internal dia - could be skimmed out?
The friction surface is 6.5mm wider - not ideal but okay
O/D - Transit drum is 8mm wider :o so theres a lot more material there to dissapate the heat
Overall height - Transit drum is 18mm deeper :( - unfornately I think thats the killer and I dont think it will work unless you come up with a method for moving the shoes around 12mm out from their current position, which should be possible? A spacer plate behind the backplate?

just a quick search reveals this one:

http://www.apec-braking.co.uk/apec_deta ... OTA&oeref=

Which is a 5 stud hiace/hilux one, unsure of the PCD but everything seems much more similar

Mountings 5
Drum Diameter 254.0mm
Maximum diameter 255.5mm
Drum width 66.5mm
Outside diameter 302.5mm
Overall height 78.0mm

Its the same width as the VW one, but at least the ID is the same as the transit drums :) and because the friction surface is 2.5mm wide the backplate would only need to be spaced 10mm odd :)

still think it would be easier using the t4 backplates and brake set up than machining up spacers etc....

Yes... thats the idea.

The distance between the surface of the halfshaft to the back of the shoes is greater on the transit than the VW, so you need to space the backplate into the drum for the whole surface of the shoe to contact the drum...

does that make sense?

yeah see what your doing :D - not sure where they start the measurements from tho :?
the tranist drums are very think on the mounting face - not sure if that would need taking into account as most of the other drums are thinner :) i think your on the right lines an i'd be pritty sure you could do it this way :D

notice the "about" obviously measurements would need to be taken on the van to work out the appropriate spacing. Given that the friction surface of the VW/toyota drums is a far bit larger it wouldn't be *that* critical so long as its the same on both sides
