1, what are the benifits?
2, does any one remember any of the details?( type/model/number of electric fans)

I was just thinking about doing the same if its worth it

Back in the old days when all cars had them  when I was a young mechanic, they used to say removing the fan and fitting an electric one gives a couple more bhp because it doesnt have to turn the fan, dont really know if its true but the physics would suggest it is.

madmark: overheating is an issue as i've driven to and from portugal this summer and although i've not let it overheat it does mean sometimes i'm slowing to about 50 mph to let the engine cool down

Surely a trip to scrappers would give you fans to pick and choose from. A simple switch and fuse would be easiest for power. If you can be bothered, get a thermostatic switch so it comes on automatically.

You could leave your vans fan and fit electric one in front of the rad, just make sure the air flows in the right direction when it switches on.

The electric fan from a mondeo is a good size to go for.

It was me who posted about he fan, not too long ago. I used a Metro fan cos (a) theyre cheap and plentiful, (b) i've always found them reliable and (c) they fit the transit rad just right. Iv'e wired mine via a relay and a switch on the dash. I like to keep an eye on what going on, so a switch suits me, but you can get a proper Ford top hose with a switch take off as part of the hose. Don't know which model, but there is one for a Pinto. I used to run these fans on my rally cars, without ever having a problem. Also if you're running hot, remove the thermostat, it makes a hell of a difference. Done it on my Mk 3 and it runs great. Rabbit...
STANDARD SUCKS. MODIFY IT ?

and i've cut them down to fit the space between the radiator and water pump pulley,
which is the proudest part of the engine, so with a couple of brackets and a little wireing
it should be sorted 8)
