paint job

Postby Hairylex » Thu Mar 09, 2006 6:20 pm

Hi.
Just been to look at yet another pos replacement for my van and yet again its not really in much better nick than my old "p" reg.
Has any one any idea what i should be looking to pay for a respray on my 100 semi high semi long van? and also how hard would it be to get new rear doors but without windows.
It seems that i may be better off tidying mine witch i know and trust rather than buying some abussed dog.

The doors aren't difficult to get...what is difficult though is finding some close to you at the right price. ebay has them pretty regular but some people start them high. I bought a pair with windows and then when I scrapped the van sold them for approximately what I paid for them, a week after I bought them a solid pair came up on ebay and went for about £10 more than I had paid for mine, so it is simply being online looking at the right time. The commercial breakers like united vans sell them but they want good money for them, not hugely more than ebay can be but a little more. but then ebay is crazy one week you have to pay loads another week next to nothing. doors will deffinately rise in price once the nicer weather arrives as people are more willing to do the swap over but this will mean that the ebay prices will rise. Same as buying a convertable...best time is in the winter ;)

Your painting bill I wouldn't like to say how much it would greatly depend on if you want a "blow over" or a "proper job" either way neither will be especially cheap since it is a lot of metal to cover...plus if you go for a "proper job" who knows what they will find when they start to rub it down. I used to have a contact who would do a bare metal respray for around the £500 mark but this was some time ago and even at the time I thought this was too cheap for the work it entailed.

Yes the big boys of scrapping will take your wallet fast. I had to pay £100 for a pair of rear solid doors. They were in ok condition but i would have expected to pay less than that considering i had to get them respayed aswell  As far as the respay mines going to cost approx £550 for two wings and a sill + full respay (100 swb low roof)

Well after praising the guy who sprayed my van years ago and did a superb job, i have to say the respray he did on mine a few weeks ago is just short of crap :!: Just to fill you in 2 wings and a sill, dinks and rust was suposed to be removed and said that he was going to shot blast and fill the rear arches. After just a week and half the new wings are seeping rust through the sealant (at the joins) the sill has rust coming through, the rust at the top of the screen pillars is sprayed over, not even sanded back, The arches have been filled (probably without the rust being cleaned up)...etc etc.......oh and overspray on all the door handles and filler cap etc. One wing mirror is also loose and vibrates all over the place :!: To say I'm pissed is one whole big understatement :!: The reason i had it done in the first place is to keep the van on the road for a few more years, I'll be lucky if it see's a few more months before it looks like a bloody rust bucket again  . When the guy gave me a price to do all the work he said it would be about £500/£600, Which i thought was cheap and i actually said thats cheap i thought it would be closer to a grand. Nah....he said. Now i see why. Problem is, if i take it back i'll lose the van again (last time i was on holiday so it didn't matter) and i just cant be without a van. I havent said a word to him YET! but im waiting for my blood to cool down first. The other problem of coarse is the fact that were as before the respray, it just looked a bit untidy, it now looks (or will look shortly) like its had a bad respay to cover a multitude of sin's and probably de-valued the van at the same time.
You can probably feel the disgust i have and i can only say to hairylex and anybody else looking for a respay.......Make sure you know EXACTLY what your getting before you send your van in! Talk with them and find out how he's gonna do it.
Me, well i'm just the master of hindsight! He will get a vist soon but because the guy is a bridge to quite a bit of my work, i just need to tread softly but firmly, so that bridge dont get burnt!

You sound understandably pissed off

Why the hell cant these people do a proper bleedin job? Its hard to find a good one thats for sure, I have an excellent bloke that will do it any way you chose, from a complete bare metal respray to a blowover, and the prices fit accordingly, a top class job will set you back about a grand, for new arches dent and rust removal it would be about £700, you could get a nice looking blowover and fill for about £500. (only adviseable if you intend P/exing soon).

 what a shame mate ,you think you are dooing the write thing! :? a frend of mine had his minibus tidyed up as the arches were looking bad , the guy who done it is a very good sprayer ,but my frend only wanted a fill and tidy up , the van came back looking mint ,withing 1 day the arches on the rear were bubling  but the job only cost £300 and the sprayer did warn him it wont last!

the only way is replace the arches and wings but this is a big job and very costly! :? i havent seen a rust free transit for along time! :(

two thing that grudge me......
1/ I said that the van needed to last me a few more years
2/ I said that i thought it would be close to a grand to do
3 things actually
3/ When i do work for the industrial site he works at (and do work for him) I dont ask him "do you want a crap job or a first class job?" I just do a good job all the time. I dont cut corners and i dont charge the earth. A good job for a fair price.

I have it in my head that whilst he was doing the respray he was just thinking to himself "its just a work van" That makes my blood boil. The times iv'e heard that phrase! It maywell be a work horse but its MY work horse!
I think next (if there is a next) time i do work at his house i'll do a crap job and when he ask's why i'll just tell him "its only a semi-detatched"
When i get my camera back off a friend i'll take some photos so you can see the rust after just a couple of weeks.
Anyway iv'e gotta get my mind off the subject.........think im having a Negative Reality Inversion :!: :D

You only need two tools in life: WD-40 and Duct Tape. If it doesn't move and it should, use WD-40. If it moves and shouldn't, use the duct tape.

We only pay £300 for a blow over, but have found the best thing to do is to poke holes in the rust, then the filler has to be slapped on!
