I searched for ages to find a decent t280 but when i got it it had a small oil leak. I took it to the tranny centre to sort it and when it was on the ramp he said it was a hairline crack in the fuel pump, a common problem apparetnly.
He then said that the deisel drips onto the starter and knackers it up then starts softening the water pipes and then they split. oh and if the turbo goes it sucks oil into the engine and blows it up!
all in all the price 700quid was discussed for a new fuel pump.

im gutted but its now sold and im looking for a mk 5. all the reviews i have read about most new makes of vans says that they are basically bodged together and are piles of shite. The only one that seems any good is the vw lt range.

the plus side is that ive made 250 quid on the van!

i did not and well miss a turbo greatly as the car has one and what a difference

yeah but the van had done 109k and next thing will be the clutch, then the flywheel then the box and they cost way too much to maintain. Plus everything is bloody coded to the engine. They are a nicer van but it seems that ford just threw it together and charge over the top when it goes wrong. Ive only read a couple of good reviews from actual owners.

Dont get me wrong it was a lovely van but ford didnt think about what they were doing when they made the engine. I mean come on, a fuel pump thats casing eventually cracks, whats that about?

Nice van but too expensive to fix. Im used to the 100ps 2.5 banana shape and i dont think ill really miss the turbo. Id rather go a bit slower and save money on fuel!

you are looking at a van with too many miles to start with, i know it was cheaper but you need low miles ,smileys are rotting away as nathen says i havnt seen a mint one for years !
i would try and stick with the mk6 myself but if you have to go to a smiley then it will be hard to find one without rust!
it may have reasonable wings but what about the floor and chassis were you dont know its rotton,
i had a corker 1999 lwb turbo auto 1 owner with 100k on the clock ,i looked under it proply and nearly had a hart attack ,put it this way i am shure it would of needed the handbrake cable holder welding on a new x member by now! so this is when i decided no more smileys for me!

could you not smell the diesel when you checked it out before buying it?

no couldnt smell it. I looked at the engine while cold then didnt look when it was hot. I just didnt know the problems to look for thats all. I only really know about mk5s. even if i spent extra money on a mk6 it would eventually happen again and i would be in the same situation and end up with a big bill.

Why dont they just make the vans properly to start with? then again maybe they do it on purpose so you HAVE to go and spend stupid money.

Its done you a favour, The gearbox would have gone any way, I know a guy up here who does nothing but gearboxes and has done for 40 yrs or sop, he does all the police gearboxes up here and alsorts, he recons the mk6 is ok in itself but the FWD gear box which he showed me is junk, and the price of a rebuild or recon is massive, 1000 for a rebuild, thats if you take it of and fit it again yourself. and somewhere over2000 for a recon or it might have been 3000, I pull a 21 ft caravan with my non turbo 2.5 mk5, it is slow to get moving, but it goes up hills i wouldnt have thought possible, but a turbo can be handy if your in a hurry.
