Not sure but I think it's the other way round :( :( :(

You can fit a newer engine in your pre '92 and not use a cat :!:

i'm not sure of the mot regulations, but for SVA the cat requirement is based on date of manufacture of the engine, even if you are applying for a new reg.
but you must have documentary evidence to prove the date of manufacture

sounds silly doesn't it but as far as emissions are concerned the test regs do go by the age of the engine not the vehicle - all you need to do is prove the engine manufacture year and you've cracked it - personally I would fit all the gubbins to keep the emissions clean - up to you though

Not according to my testesrs manual Motorwise :?

Only if the vehicle has been through SVA will the emmisions be tested on the year of the engine, if you just have an engine change then its the year of the vehicle.

Age of the vehicle. We have laods of later engines in ours, but the test goes to the reg of the van.

""Test according to which is older, engine or vehicle.
e.g. A 1995 car fitted with a 1991 engine (of whatever make), test to 1991 standards for emission purposes.

Note: The onus is on the vehicle presenter
to prove engine age.""

Well thats been changed in the last couple of years!!!

My 2000 manual says its the age of the vehicle.......doesnt even mention "proving the age of the engine" :? :?

Thing is i want to keep the convertion simple, 24v would be nice but to many wires etc where as a carb v8 nice and simple(ish) and the sound the dogs. How would you prove the build date of the engine?

That's the problem, how would you (yes, I know there is a date code on the block, but that doesn't prove too much). That's why the testers go for the simplest, the reg of the van. Unless it's a personal plate, a glance of the number plate will give em that!
