Postby daviessat » Mon May 23, 2005 9:42 pm

Hi, just joined the club and this is my first try.
does anyone know if it is possible to fit a steering rack to a 1990 2.5 diesel in place of the old box. what would i need and what kind of job is it.
if i include power steering where does the drive for the pump come from

thanks for reply Mark, the van is single wheel long wheel base high top, it has only done 37k genuine miles but has got play in steering just wondered if a rack conversion would be better and if if would be easier conversion without power added

davie ,with that milage it should be good, but you can try and take up the play abit by adjusting the nut on the side of the box ,turn it in about half a turn to start with and see if makes it any better when you drive it! also a good thing that might help is fill the box with grease ,and greese your kingpins as well this might help! steering boxes are strange you get a good one or a bad one,i have a bad one on my mk1 and my mk3 is good!
see how you get on mate! :D

Hi Mark, have adjusted it but the only thing it does is make the steering heavy tried this about 3 months ago just after i got it. I think it must be a worn gear inside box but so saying mot didn't pick it up they only said typical transit steering but with having to turn the wheel about half a turn before it decides to turn wheels i think it is more than that, thats why i thought if it is worn i could change it for a rack. I don't mind if it has no power steering as long as i can get rid of the play

mate that is a pain , the only thing you can do is get another box, unless you are a good welder that is have you seen the photo,s of lukes conversion and sixwheel phills ,beleave me if i could change to a rack i would! :D but filling it up with grease may help but it should not have that play in it for low miles like that!

Should be easyer on a mk3 though no inner wings to alter or steering column problems to sort out!
Only thing you would need to sort is the subframe rearmost mounting - im not sure the lwb's have the bolt holes!!

adjusting box

Postby transitgeoff » Sun May 29, 2005 9:42 pm

Hi just one thing to add, when you have adjusted that screw and lock nut, always get a copper hammer or similar and crack the output shaft, droparm link end of the box under the wing to realign the internals of the box, if you dont do this theres no point adjusting that screw and locknut  all you Transitbuffs should no this, read your proper ford manuals

i saw a transit on ebay, converted to ifs, with rack, i e mailed seller, and he said it was'nt to difficult, and would get back to me, i have thought about trying this for some time. as i think it could be straight forword with the mk111, early transit, looks like it is just a bush and bearing in place of shocker mounting at top, keep meaning to find out if the twin and short wheel base share the same repair panel, for top mounting---just not done it yet...steering box turns better than rack, but is a pain , when starts to wander...my mk111 is off the road now,so this is the time for me to get my digit out...
