Cold start systym. How does it work?

Hi Guys.

Could any one help with a problem I am having with a transit, The said vehicle is a 1997 swb 2.5DI transit (mechanical pump). The problem I am having is it seems the cold start has failed. There is no ilumination of the glow light and there is no power to the glow/injector on the inlet or the fuel solanoid on the bulkhead. I presume these must be controled by the relay box on the drivers side inner wing. I may be barking up the wrong tree but please correct me if im wrong.

Could any one throw some light on the way this system works or even better a wiring diagram for the system.

Any help would be gratfully recieved.

Are you talking about a flame start device as the Di has no glow plugs

As far as I know it only comes on when it is cold enough (If a flame plug is fitted)

But there are normally no cold start devices - because it doesnt need it above -10!

theresone built on to the side of the pump and one from the stat housing guys remember lol

the one with a wax slave pulling a cable from the thermostat housing and one that is electric and is fed from the supply to the shut off valve and a thermo switch on the block

neather of which lights any thing up on the dash to say its working

relay on the bulk head would be the one for the starter i think but cant say without a pic


whats the engine doing ? when my CSD packed in it was very lumpy at idle for a few seconds to a min but would start

where are you at that need a CSD btw been far to hot round here to need one this week lol

Not a van that age unless its had an engine swap.

The one on the stat housing went before the plastic stat housing was introduced and the solenoid on the side of the pump went in early '96.

There is an internal device in the later pumps which advances the timing slightly - but thats all it does and doesn't help that much!

did it ? ok , just the 97 engine I first had had one

we live and learn , guess it was down to the P.O. swapping pumps , engine never did run right and best i got it to work was 2 cylinders at a time

I have put a new battery on it and it is heaps better allthough it is not starting as quick as it use too. The van can sometimes turn over for up to 4 seconds before it starts. I am sure that it started on the first revolution of the engine in the past.

Any ideas?

The van taking longer to start could be a few things, It could just be fair wear and tear, or it could be that the timing is slightly out, When did it last get a timing belt
