Your 1996 van is a MK5
Is the new battery the right size :?:
Does it have an aftermarket alarm or stereo fitted which could be draining the battery :?:
Have you removed and cleaned all the earths :?: Not just looked at them

try taking the earth off the battery all night reconnect in the morning and see if it starts ok..if it starts fine then its defintly something draining..if it dont start then its likely the battery at fault...Have you also checked to make sure its charging properly.

Its an electrical fault! (or at least thats not helping!)

I would start with Jays suggestion, disconnect the battery earth overnight and see what happens. I would then look to see if its draining current through the alternator
