Turbo Blown?

Postby Davidkent » Fri Mar 12, 2010 7:10 pm

Hi guys.

I've a turbo here for my spare van that is no good.
I've just bought another one, from a reputable breakers, and have opened the parcel, only to find this one seems to be the same.

How do i tell that a turbo is no good?
When i look in the end, there's a fan like thing, on almost an axle.
This has loads of play in both the original, and the one i've just bought.

Is this how i can tell its blown?

Can i Re-con a Turbo myself?

Cheers

Lucas Laser 2000/IDS
95 Pre Production DRW TD Highcube
95 Hallmark
96 150 100PS LWB Hi-Top
96 Autosleeper Duetto
06 Mk7 (scrap)

Gaffa tape is like the force, it has a light side, a dark side, and it holds the universe together

is the turbo of a mk6 :?:

when these turbos fail they become very noisy., its the way there designed, you can have quite a bit of play on some of them and they wil be fine.

Basically there's play all ways on the second hand one.

I've just taken it apart because it didn't look right.

The spindle on the manifold side has come off totally and been loose for some time it would appear that its been hitting the manifold or the like, the fins seem all snapped.

Can i re-con this myself, and where can i get the kit?

Cheers

I got a kit off Ebay because my oil seals had gone and I was blowing blue smoke. Can't remember what was in the kit but did it ok. You need to make sure the armature is in balance I beleive. I think the hardest point on mine was removeing and refitting the huge circlip - after I'd soaked the whole thing in penetrating oil for a day to get it out of the manifold. Don't know if any of this helps. John G
