ETA on van is now Tuesday next week.

Ordering timing belt and fan belt in the mean time.

Right, I was wondering about the best way to clean off the surface rust on the bottom of the van...

Is it normal to use a pressure steam cleaner to get some layers of dirt and rust off? Or should you only use a drill and a wire brush?

What is the best way to go about this...

Also, once you've exposed all the bare metal on the bottom, what is the best way to treat it so the rust doesn't come back?

Do you first paint over the bare metal, then cover it in something else?

TIA

Bare metal should be at least primered first, then painted, then some kind of underseal treatment. I would actually treat the bare metal to an anti rust treatment then primer and then the paint and so on. Some primers might even have the rust inhibitor as part of its ingredients but check the can/bottle/tin.
In your case though I would wait until you have paid the welding bill to see how much 'old' metal you have left to treat.

As for cleaning it down...are you being serious? Of course wash it first, then the drill and wire brush on the loose flaking metal.

Look on my thread for how I cleaned up old rusty metal to clean metal and then treated it. It's the same process for you (less the filler!)

Transit-Tricky wrote:Started work on Merlin at last! Cleaned and pressure washed the rear arches.

They are pretty clean and sound under the arches

The outside edges are a little scabby though. So I started to rough them up and rub down:

Then put on a little bit of this:

Cheers, TT

The old rusty bits have gone hard and I will fill and shape them during the next session.

That's it for now. Much more to follow in the coming weeks... TT 8)

Ok, so what is the best way to wash it down?

Bog standard pressure washer from B&Q or some sort of steam washer or... Just worried about soaking the whole lot with water.

Ok, been looking into the undersealing products.

Two popular choices seem to be dinitrol or POR-15.

Seems with POR-15, all you need to do is clean down all the metal, apply Metal Ready which gives the POR something to bind to, and then coat the lot. No need for rust primer or paint as this stuff goes on directly.

*EDIT*

After using the search function on the forums, it seems there are two points of view with regards to undersealings vs simply painting and waxoyl'ing.

It is really hard to weigh up the best course of action as I've seen mainly people on classic car forums slagging waxoyl as it doesnt last and recommending dinitrol as the MOD use it...
