A deeply philosophical question! Which is more ordinary: a nice layer of dirt, 'au naturel' as it were; or a slightly artificial clean and shiny look, as delivered? I certainly don't wash it every Sunday morning, and the pressure washer (of which more later) is intended for cleaning underneath, to keep the dreaded rust at bay.

Is the ordinary van really ordinary :?: Just a thought given that its blue, and most ordinary transits are in fact white, Is the ordinary van in fact just pretending to be ordinary to win friends and influence people, when its really a superior van, wearing its blue jacket with understated pride :?:

I must down to the seas again ...

Image

to the lonely sea and the sky,
And all I ask is a Transit and TomTom to steer her by. *

Time to de-rig that job from last month. The Ordinary Van and owner have been busy running around and too busy to write up the Diary - once this job is out of the way, there will be more to write.

*With apologies and great respect to John Masefield, Poet Laureate from 1930 to 1967. 'Sea Fever' is one of the best known poems in the English language, learned in class by many a schoolchild, and often parodied. Masefield did know his subject well, having gone to sea at age 13:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Masefield

Interesting to note that he omitted the verb 'go' from early versions of the poem:

Also on a maritime theme, 'Cargoes'. Reproduced here:

These items would fit in a Transit too, although the rails would probably stick out of the back door!

Until I knocked it off by accident, I imagined that it was hot-moulded in place, as one would expect on a quality vehicle.

The title is ironic, of course, and I thank you for the compliment on behalf of the Ordinary Van, out there every day, "just getting on with the job."

Yes, it's official: 64% white, 13% blue.

The Second Cut Is The Deeper ...

Image

... as it turns out.* It was hit by the wing mirror of another van. The guy told me about it and apologised and it's someone I work with regularly so I had to accept it with good grace. The worrying thing is that if the wing mirror hit there, the situation was pretty close to a side swipe of the van.

The paint is not broken and it hasn't opened the seam, so I will T-Cut off the scratches and just leave it, I suppose. There is no access to the inside because of the inner skin of the door pillar, so no chance to push the dent out. Does anyone know if the suction-type dent pullers are any good?

It seems that however careful I am to avoid running into other vehicles or objects while driving and to park defensively (as far out of other people's way as possible, avoiding bottlenecks and corners, etc.), it is impossible to avoid damage to a working van.
