Mk2 Transit, 2L pinto poor fuel economy, won't accelerate...

Postby jckm2000 » Fri Apr 21, 2023 4:54 pm

... without choke.

Hi Folks,
I've got a 2l pinto with a weber 34 ich fitted to my mk2 swb motorhome.
Starts fine, engine purrs nicely but it hesitates on acceleration with choke fully in. Give it a smidge of choke and it pulls ok. Cruises ok without choke.
Also I'm only getting 12mpg!

I've done the seals on the servo and renewed all vac hoses. Distributor vac is good. So is oil breather. Checked for air leaks on manifold etc. Timing set to 8°.

New jets (165 main, 50 idle, 190 air
corrector), diaphragm, float and gaskets on carb. Compression is good.

Any ideas what's going on?

Not looking for stella mpg but 12's a bit low!

Any ideas?

Have you taken the spark plugs out for a look yet? The colour and condition of them can tell you a lot about how the air/fuel mixture is burning and maybe point you in the right direction. Is it running on electronic ignition or points?

Hi Mr Twin Choke,
Well, it's a bit hard to tell because I keep having to pull the choke out. Currently they're a bit sooty near the base but whiteish at the electrodes.

I'd be tempted to give them a clean and try running it with no choke for a while (if you can stand it). That way you'll be able to see better how it's burning. Could be accelerator pump diaphragm has a small leak even if it is new. I've seen plenty faulty new parts over the years

Hi everyone, I'm new to this forum.
The quoted part (if I quoted correctly) suggests running lean and possibly a punctured membrane (can't remember which).
Happened on my K10 Micra with a Solex twin barrel.
Floor it without choke it just sorta hums in agony, pull 0,5cm of choke and it takes off. With that membrane punctured I spent 14L of petrol in 80km, on a 1.0L engine lol.

Is the accelerator pump working with the air filter off engine not running if you operate the throttle you should see fuel squirting into the venture also have you checked that the float level is within the settings if shutting off to early so the level in the float chamber is low it can weaken the mixture .the only other problem I’ve had with Webber carbs is worn throttle spindles.
