The 'Surrogate Mother' has now arrived
Image

This poor old girl was purchased from Luke J, (what a nice chap, he fits blinds etc, send him a pm if you need his services), who has just upgraded to a Mk6 in order to remain lez compliant. Luke would like to sell the roof rack if any of you lads are interested?

This van will be used for experimental purposes, it will be 'impregnated' with a variety of different petrol engines, thus allowing fully operational engine conversions to be developed.

Got one here awaiting 'impregnation'

New gaskets and seals, new belt kit, new cam and followers, and the spray bar! This one is sold to an existing customer, will be fitted into a Mk4 truck.
Think I had forgotten how these go together

Modified power steering pump bracket

This enables the original mk3/4/5 2.5di power steering pump to be used together with the standard adjusting bracket.

this is all good but at around 16mpg average does running a pinto in an old truck make financial sense?

Engine now has a brand new vvcarb and thermostat housing.
Image
The thermostat housings on these engines all seem to corrode badly, possibly caused by lack of anti-freeze, a new one being purchased from Fords, (the new casting does not bear a Ford part number :? ), a snip at £28.16, part number FMU 6117379 :!:

Just an update to keep all those interested correctly informed.
The engine featured above is due to be installed in my customer's Mk4 truck this weekend and he has consented to have pictures of the conversion posted on here to assist other members :D
There seems to be some confusion as to the different parts required to complete the pinto conversion for differing Mk's of Transits.

Mk2 Transits require, amongst other parts, engine mounting brackets (Transit specific). The exhaust manifold appears to be similar, if not the same, as the type used on early pinto engined cars, single down-pipe type. You will need top and bottom hoses, not sure if these are still available from Fords. The Mk2 pinto engine I have here has a gearbox adapter plate and a Transit specific flywheel used to connect it to the four speed box, neither of these parts are available from Fords. I have the above parts if any of you are 'short' or wish to have a pinto fitted in a Mk2.

Mk3 Transits require, when fitting pinto to mt75 box, amongst other parts;
Engine mounting brackets (Transit specific), no longer available from Fords.
Exhaust manifold (Transit specific), no longer available from Fords.
Flywheel (Transit specific), no longer available from Fords.
Engine adapter plate, no longer available from Fords.
Later pinto thermostat housing, the one with the small bore return pipe, Ford part, available :D
Top and bottom hoses
If your van is fitted with power steering, you will need a 'twin' front pulley, (Transit specific).
Again, we have the above parts if any of you are in need, including modified di power steering pump brackets to enable the standard di power steering pump to be mounted onto the pinto block.

Mk4, much as above, again, most parts available.

Mk5, much as above but special engine mounting brackets are required, we manufacture these and can supply them along with any other major parts required to complete your pinto conversion.

We are also interested in acquiring any pinto conversion parts that you members may have kicking around, better that these parts be saved and used for others wishing to go down the engine conversion route than melted down to make Mk8's

Started on a pinto conversion for a Mk4 truck today, got the di out, cleaned the engine bay, ready to fit the pinto.
Image
The truck has power steering, so this will require our modified power steering pump bracket. The design does not require the removal of the power steering pump from the vehicle and uses the existing pump on a special mounting bracket developed for the pinto engines.
There is also a power steering reservoir mounting bracket to be fitted, this is required because the reservoir originally mounts onto the di air filter box which has been removed, the pinto engine having an air filter box mounted directly to the carb.
