Non starting mk6

Postby dirtydog » Fri Jun 26, 2015 2:37 pm

Bought a 2003 90ps lwb hi top last week and all was fine for the first morning then it wouldn't start. Tried to jump start it but made no difference. Managed to get it started by pulling it down the road in 3rd so I figured it was the starter.
Put a new starter motor and battery on it this afternoon and still nothing.
With ignition off I'm getting 12.5 volts at the big cable at the starter until I turn the ignition on to where the lights come on the dash and then it drops down to about 5.5v. I get the same at the jump point under the bonnet.

Anyone got any ideas?

Starting to get grief from the other half for buying a lemon :(

Putting a multimeter on the battery I get a constant 12.5v ignition on and turning to start

Mine did this a couple of months back, the problem was that the glow plugs were robbing the power from the battery, eventually the link wire went up in smoke

I cut out the link wire and it's been fine since :D

It's a fat wire coming away from the jump point. I don't know what colour it was, as it was burned to a crisp when I found the problem

You could try pulling the glow plug relay and see if it starts normally

That's a handy link, thanks.

Pulled the relay, still no start :( Not even a click from the starter

I've just re-read your original post, and I'm now wondering if you have a faulty ignition switch

Just had my multimeter on the jump point again.
Ignition of 12.5 volts
Position 1 so radio comes on 12.5v
Position 2 dash lights on 5.5v
Turned as if to start voltage drops to 0.2

As in the bit attached to the end of the ignition barrel?
Am I pushing my luck hoping that the mk6 and mk5 have the same ignition switch
