Reverse light switch gear box

Postby cristiansure » Fri Apr 05, 2024 11:07 pm

I have a Mk6 Transit with the 6 speed gearbox. For a while I've had issues with intermittent reversing light operation. When they finally stopped working altogether I sourced a replacement switch and verified that the lights worked when the switch was operated manually, it turns out that my reversing lights still don't work, or only very rarely. All I can assume is that whatever actuates the switch inside the gearbox is not doing so correctly.

Has anyone else come up against this issue?

There is a post about the actuator within the gearbox.

Being a Mk6 6 speed, it must be a TDCi 2.4 135 RWD..?? Some of the "aftermarket" switches aren't quite long enough to reach the reverse actuator, is it a genuine switch..??

Hi there I’m new here although I’ve got transit for some time now. I also got problem with reverse light coming up.
It’s probably the thing that’s actuating the switch. Can someone send a link to the discussion that’s about that or recommend what to do here. Thank you!

Hi sorry for not being clear and thanks for the response.

So it’s not working. The lights are not working when I select the reverse gear, but the reverse is working.
I’ve changed the switch still same. If I go into reverse and then come back a bit there is some kind of click on the lever and the lights at the back are lighting up, I’ve connected camera that’s how I know. The switch was identical with the old one is on the gearbox. Vehicle is transit 2011 rwd 2.4l mk7

If you’ve changed the switch for a genuine new one then I would be looking at gear linkages from the dash to the box. Maybe theres some play in something which means it doesn’t activate the switch on the box properly.

There is repair to one end of the linkage but it’s not moving don’t think that could be the problem

Hello from Barcelona! I had a problem: reverse gear engaged fine (MT 82), but the taillights didn't come on, and there was no engagement sound, even with a new switch. The solution was to grind down the switch by 1 mm with a grinding disc, achieving enough depth for the mechanism to make contact with the switch. Now everything works perfectly. Cheers!
