Starting issue

Postby Pat Marsden » Thu Jun 06, 2024 7:33 am

Hi All, ive a 2020 185ps Sport, 39k, and am experiencing some starting issues. Before I take it to Ford id see if anyone else has experienced the same.
Cold start is fine, wait for the preheat light to go out and it fires straight away. Drive to my job and at the end of the day the preheat light doesnt come on and it just turns over but doesnt fire. It times itself out and on the next attempt it will eventually splutter a bit and then fire up. Once running its ok and if I stop on the way home it will start again. Seems to be if left for any time it has the issues.

No fault codes showing and log of previous starts not showing any issues. Logically Im thinking that it could be the glow plug control module/relay? Gradually getting worse as the glow plug light doesnt come on at all now, even first thing.

Hi both,

Did either of you manage to sort this issue?
I'm having the exact same issue on my 21 custom when left for a while. I was thinking glow plug module replacement, but not so sure now I've read this thread.

Cheers

Update on my situation
My starting issue developed somewhat
Thought it was a fueling issue so booked it in to Ford. No issues found, so they suspect compression issue... compression test confirms low compression on 2 cylinders... head needs to come off now :(
Bills starting to add up!

Mileage is currently just over 80K. Mine is a 21 plate. Needs a new cylinder head as not repairable apparently.
I know of a Transit pick up ( 2L eco blue) with 22k on the clock that has had the same problem and needs complete new engine.. a 10k fix

Corroded valve seats, apparently due to “poor” material used by Ford, a defect that was obviously never acknowledged in vehicles outside of warranty.
Initially, it seemed to affect Transit+TransitCustom vehicles from the early years of production (2016>2018), but over the years, several cases have also emerged in vehicles around 2020.

Hi did Ford replace head under warranty?
Is your van going ok now ?
Not sure what to do with mine still starting in morning go to work then leave it for a couple of hours if the glow plugs don't activate it cranks but won't fire
Leave it for five minutes then glow plugs activate fires up ok

So mine turned out to be 2no valve seats at fault. New head fitted by Ford (out of warranty) at a 4k cost. Caught it quite early. Some need complete new engine at about 10k cost!
Starts on the button every time now. I have since activated the exhaust filter Status on the display so I know when to go on a drive to cause a regen.
Seems to be anything with the 2L Ecoblue engine could have similar issues and not necessarily high milers. I know of a Transit pickup locally with only 20K miles has the same issues I had.

Just taken mine apart for exactly the same reasons 2021@ 35k replaced 8 exhaust valves due to blow by and corrosion. Seats recut. The piston tops on mine were even corroded so they’ve been changed as well.

Blimey that's a lot of work required. Are you doing it yourself or having to pay someone?
