Postby Smooth Hound » Fri Jan 05, 2007 1:30 pm

hio, I dont know if any one has heard of this but a friend of my sons was saying that he runs his van on central heating oil, a mixture of 1 gallon of cheap engine oil to 5 gallons of c, heating oil, i am not sure though if he wasbeing honest or having a laugh, does any one have any knowledge of this.

I did the exact opposite once.

I ran out of heating oil on a bank holiday and put 50gals of red in - it worked a treat but smoked its nuts off, thick black soot all over the back wall around the vent!

I'd like to see you post the differences between Red Diesel and Heating Oil bearing in mind that Red Diesel is the same as White Diesel other than the dye!

What additives would be different, I wonder if it smokes more because it ignites faster or slower than diesel, meaning some is going out unburnt properly, hence the black smoke, perhaps meaning a fractional change to the timing would reduce the black smoke, and possibly its the adding of oil into the CHF that maybe reduces the ignition heat , helping to not burn the valves, Just a thought.

Are we talking 21 second heating oil :? :?

I used to run a tractor on this 8) used to be called TVO heating oil mixed with petrol to get about 50 octane 8)

Its all in the octane (the dissinclination to ignite by compression)

Anyway 21 sec oil is about 15-20 octane parraffin is 0 and diesel is 0
21 second oil will not ignite properly in a diesel

I may have the wrong end of the stick totally

I dont know what 21 sec is so I dont know, but I believe the oil this guy was using was out of his central heating tank, just normal central heating oil. he reckoned it was the same as diesel only a bit thinner, which i suppose is why he mixes engine oil with it, just a normal cheap engine oil he reckoned, mind you i dont know how long he has had the van or anything, so we will see what happens to his engine.

21 second oil is Kerosene

Basically parraffine with the aromatics left in (gives the Octane)

just want to bounce an idea off you - transits run on diesel so why not fill it with that? :D

this could well have done irrepairable damage to the injection pump the correct fuel also acts as a pump lubricant and the pumps are designed with this in mind - when you start introducing any old fuel to it, it protests by breaking in a costly fashion

by any old fuel I'm not just taliking about the rubbish thats been fed to this van I'm including veg oil and biodiesel - it's rubbish and causes the owners of late diesels, particularly high pressure diesels (CDI's HDI's TDCI's etc) thousands of pounds when they go wrong

the decision is yours :)
