Engine probs

I was driving my 2.5 diesel Transit van the other day and forgot to take it out of 4th going downhill fast as it would go, suddenly a loss of power, then it returned, then again a lose of power then i realised that i hadn't changed into 5th and must have been hitting the top of 4th, then drove home no probs. Next day, van keep losing power and stalling at any speeds in any gears

any ideas???

hi mate and welcome ,it sound like air getting in somehow,i cant see you would have done any damage my haveing it on the limmit for a short time !

cheers, I'm gonna change the fuel filter tonight, incase any crap is in there.

where could air possibly be getting in??

a little while ago i ran out off fuel (completely) due to busted fuel gauge, i had to bleed the injectors, could thid have caused a problem?? it was a while ago tho, and has been running sweet ever since

you could try the fuel filter first ,does it smoke when it dies out????

mate the wire is the only one that goes to the pump - the pump is on the left hand side of the engine (looking from front)- to be honest i dont think it will be that! easy check though!

not really sure what the problem could be - i'd check the joints where you blead it could be significant! what year engine is it?

The Story So Far.........

Ok, step dad came over today to help try sort the tranny, changed the fuel filter, bled the system, thought I'd add a fuel additive too, to help decoke everything, off i went on test drive, drove ok for about 2 miles then splutter splutter all the way home. So started checking stuff, found that some clown had super glued back on one of the hose connectors that stick out of the black return caps above/on the injectors. Went to scrappy, got new cap, and fitted, off I go again, spluttering worse now, engine stalls, have to get towed home, now will not run at all.

Any ideas matey???

What year is it Bandit, We had an L reg pick up with similar problem it turned out to be the pump we had to have it overhauled cost a bloody fortune cheaper to buy a new engine apparantley the can break up inside or something so I was told

You could try filling the tank full - no loss your gonna use the fuel anyway
it may help with diagnostics - see if it makes a difference!!
if it does!- its more likely to be fuel line related
if it doesnt!- its more likely to be pump related!

I also drive a Nissan 300zx twin turbo and thats just knacked up
too, so need transit to take kid to school, no pressure eh????

like luke says check the fuel line first there is sometimes a filter on the end of the fuel sender unit in the fuel tank.check fuel lines for a leak(especialy near the exhaust the pipe crosses the exhaust and sometimes get heat damage if line has come unclipped)if the fuel is ok check the lift pump if fitted as the diaphram can perish and split.check to make sure the stop valve is working ok(you can take the valve out and take the centre out to see if that is the problem but you will have to stall engine in gear to stop it. if all this fails could be the fuel injection pump .if the pump it can be expensive.

Sorry to hijack this thread but i'm having the same problem with my '93 2.5 diesel transit. Random loss of power engine cuts out and starts fine, until tonight. I ran out of diesel this time though and smoke came out the back so I put a fivers worth in and after turning the engine over and it starting and stalling a few times it fired up ok. Am I likely to have done some serious damage to the engine and would it benefit me to put more than a fiver or a tenners worth of fuel in at a time?
