Latest improvement - custom made stainless steel airbox with K&N filter.

Image

I bought a K&N replacement for a Nissan D22 and designed a cardboard model airbox that mounted over the engine. A very kind client then arranged to have it made up in their workshop. 76mm silicon duct connects the standard inlet to the new box.

Still too much intake noise for my liking, so will be fitting a duct to drop the intake down next to the radiator.

The picture doesn't really show the design. It is sort of like a flat biscuit tin with round ends to flow better - so filter in one end (back) with take off from centre of filter and then a similar size 'still air' space at the front with the intake pipe if that makes sense. 'L' shaped bracket from top of inlet manifold to exhaust manifold and 'biscuit tin' bolted to it with spacers.

That is a lovely bit of design mate 8)

Try putting another bit of that ducting on the intake side, run it down to the front of the van as a Cold Air Intake.

By placing the air intake further from the cab you will reduce the noise you hear, from inside anyway  .

Make sure you place a grille or mesh over the end of the intake though, you don't want to 'suck' small children off the pavement

Cheers for the kind words.

Yes, intake duct still to go on. Got it here but need to hack a little off the metal pipe on the biscuit tin to get enough clearance from the radiator expansion tank.
Hopefully in the next day or two. Going to take it down to near the headlight.

We got all over excited with the noise reduction from doing out the engine bay and decided to do the cab and doors as well.
Purchased another 20 sheet pack of Silent Coat (well impressed with this stuff - it is basically the same stuff as Dynamat Extreme with Butyl mastic covered in aluminium, but is thicker, heavier and cheaper than Dynamat). Stripped out all the interior (seats, mat etc.) and covered the floor, arches and the bulkhead as far as we could without taking out the dash. Also put a couple of sheets in each door with some acoustic foam left over from the engine bay.

To say I was amazed once we got it all back together would be an understatement. Thought I had gone deaf!
The difference was extraordinary.

I have installed an app called Decibel 10th on my iPhone, which measures SPL (noise) and that shows a dramatic difference.
Before we did the engine bay we had a reading of 93db in the cab at idle. Long exposure to 85db or more is harmful to hearing!
After doing the engine bay we were down to 85db - which is a huge drop as the SPL measurement is not a flat increase ... 80db is twice as loud as 70db:

http://www.chem.purdue.edu/chemsafety/t ... levels.htm

After doing the cab it is down to 73db ...

It will obviously be quite a bit louder when driving with road noise, radio blaring etc. but the one thing it has done is show a HUGE improvement for a total cost of about £120 + two days labour.

Anybody with an old van - do it!

Well you need to improve your welding skills according to Nick - and what better way than learning to weld stainless!
