Mk 6 Bonnet lock

Postby ST-ROB » Mon Jul 15, 2013 9:35 pm

The key won't open my bonnet lock and seems to be jammed somehow. Any suggestions how to release it without the key ?

A new cheap key cut should do the trick, mines just cost £7 and it solved my same issue . Twice it's happened with 2 vans and twice a new key cut solved it.

Try flooding the lock with wd40 and pushing down hard on the bonnet while turning the key :D

I went thru all that and it never worked (WD40 etc )

Ford couldn't read my key either as it was so worn however as it can only be a couple of variations they got it on 2nd attempt/guess

Take your van to the garage , get them to cut a key and if it don't work ask them to tweak it slightly again while your there. If they can't do it .... Try another garage who can

A bit over my heed as I usually just break into things so no need for keys, but for only £7 it will still be your cheapest , quickest and safest method

Although a newbie i had the same problem with a worn key and i took the rubber shroud off from around the bonnet lock and the key went in that little bit better and opened the bonnet. I did however get a key made pronto.

Well if all else fails, break out the drill. Have to open it with a screwdriver but at least I was able to check my oil and water. No doubt a new lock will be next on the shopping list.

OK, how much do you drill out? I've removed basically the whole barrel back about 15mm using a 10mm bit. I can move the remaining mechanism easily to the left and right but it still does not engage the locking mechanism i.e. when I turn it left I can't lift the bonnet at all to then turn it right and release the bonnet. I've pressed the bonnet down etc. Do I continue to drill right through - and what then would I turn? Thanks!

I read a lot about how to do the OPENINg but , but what happens when all this fails.

After 3 hours of fiddling with the keys, I drilled the lock first with a 4mm bit, then a 10mm bit, but once in by 12-15mm it came to a stop and with a flat screwdrive the lock still does nothing,

Left turn to about 11 o'clock nothing.... to the right is goes to about 2 o'clock, with some resistence.... but nothing. The bonnet will not go up or down.

There are no bolts showing apart from one on a rod that seems to go to the back of the lock from below.

QUESTION IS: What next ??? How far in do I need to go in with the drill and best size ?

Cheers

How far does a normal key go in....just measured my key and it is over 30mm till it hits the black bit..!

You may have to go in a lot further..!

Wish my missus would say that...wish I had the equipment to do that..!

I spent 2-3 hours with WD40.... jiggles and hammer to see if mine would budge. Then sorted it this way.

Removed the grill as previously mentioned here somewhere.

Drilled the centre of the lock with a 5 mm bit, then again with a 10 mm bit. (Brutal I know).....

Having gone in about 25mm, you can eventually get to the + section of the lock and hey presto, a flat screwdriver worked. Left then right,

Visit to ebay, and for £14 I get a new lock (just the bit the key goes into) and two keys.) .

The bolts holding the housing to the bodywork are 10mm
The ones on the lock itself are 6mm
I made a video but having trouble downloading it,,,,
