Air ride on MK1

I know it's possible to have air ride om MK1, but I cant find a place to buy it.

I have contacted several firms, but no one seems to have it.
Do you just buy a set and customice it? Or is it one that is bolt on?

Have you looked for a kit for a mk3/4/5 I imagine it would fit a mk1 ok.

would need to be a made up kit,

MK3-5 would be no good

I would suggest swapping to an IFS front end and replace springs with bags

Surely a LWB Twin Wheel mk3 kit would fit (if there is such a kit for one?) the underside is pretty much identical, just the axle is slightly narrower.

i would think a kit has to be made up too

but i dont think it would be that difficult to do the mk1 suspension design is pretty basic

look at AIR LIFT .CO.UK I think they will advise and sort a system for you

sounds like a lot of assumptions being made here. Air-Ride and similar kits are usually American, and tailored for their cars. I very much doubt you will get a kit for a Transit van. The Transit Mk1/2 uses the leaf springs as the axle location device, as well as being the springing medium. If you find a couple of air ride bags/shocks that will fit, you will need to remove the leaf springs, otherwise you will not be able to lower the van. Which means you will need radius arms front and rear to locate the axle. Demand for a Mk1/2 kit would be virtually non existant, so I think you will be in for a lot of work

Depends if OP wanted air assist to help the springs on say a camper or total air suspension that can slam his ride

Same as how im doing mine

for the rear im going to use the front half of the original leaf springs until just after the axle, it will then have a 15mm bar welded onto it and this will support the air bags, panard rod to centralise the axle

Not really sure how to do it, and it sounds a bit complicated

Im a truck mechanic so air suspention is common,

look for a sprinter rear set up, thats what im copying

I'm quite tempted to put air on my county, making it drive a bit better on the road ? (bit lower, bit stiffer)


have been wondering if I could just swap the leaf springs for very soft ones, so they keep everything lined up right and then use air to do most of the work

no idea how that would work off road tho ?
