Leaded V6

Postby FredTransit » Tue Nov 08, 2005 11:16 am

Ok, never had a V6 before, so my question is, do I need to add that lead replacement stuff? I won't be doing a lot of miles, but the way Belle drinks it would mean quite a bit of petrol anyway! Also, what do I need to do with the points, if anything?
Ok, that's two questions.............

If you run on striaght unleaded the exhaust valve seats will start to wear, how fast is the question, ive had 2 pintos (leaded) that i ran on unleaded and one lasted 20,000 and one lasted 3,000 :?:
I'd use the additive for peace of mind unless you are planning to get the seats done eventually? i just run em till they run rough then get the seats done

As far as I know, it depends on how long the engine has run on leaded fuel before starting to use unleaded. The longer the better...
Supposedly it's enough to use leaded for 500 miles or so for riding 5000+ without problems. This will not work with the additive - you will always have to use it.
I just drove 1000km leaded in Spain and a few thousand unleaded without any problems.

Cheers,

Rudolf

The amby has 21,000 miles on her, 1000 of that since we got her! so that's 20,000 in 20 years, much of which would have been on leaded petrol, and some of it on LPG, though the kit is gone now. Does LPG make any difference to the valve guide seals?

dunno,

but you can try... Just check you valve clearance regularly. If it changes you should use additive - or even better convert the valve seats to unleaded.

LPG os well known for hammering the sh*t out of valve seats

Which is why I had them fitted to my ex-ambulance 3.0 so it can run on gas

(I'm being sly here! It may be surplus to requiments soon  )

Good news or bad news? Does this mean that hardened valve seats are part of the conversion (if done properly) or would a cowboy just slap a kit on and wave you bye bye? I won't be able to tell which unless I get the heads off, and no reason to do that as yet!

Lead deposits on valves/seats built up over years of running on leaded (the so called lead memory) start to burn away when using unleaded or even worse LPG.Unless made of very hard material and the Essex engines are'nt,the valves will start to recede into the cylinder head (you notice it as the valve clearances get smaller). An engine running at high revs on a motorway will be subject to faster wear than one being used under lighter load.
I can't imagine any reputable company carrying out a LPG conversion without fitting hardened valve seats, then again I could never imagine that any goverment would ban lead in petrol before they worked out if potassium or sodium or any of the other replacements are as or more harmfull,(but I bet they haven't).
