Hmm,
I thought the lower limits applied to anything 'non car-derived'. :?:
The new Discovery is over 2 tons.

it's not far off I'd guess - I've just come off a VOSA MOT inspectors course and they are very soon tightening up on number plates in the MOT test so they can be read by ANPR correctly - plates are on the test now for spacing and some fonts but it's quite loose at the moment, this is about to change - there are other additions to the test coming as well but they were told in confidence so my lips are sealed

Are you having to change your ramp for one of those new expensive ones that will require only one person to carry out the MOT :?:

And your headlamp machine will also need updating, I bet :!:

And to stop the government from introducing the 2 year MOT, a tax will be introduced on the MOT :?:

4x4 with windows would be considered a car (guess). If they don't have windows then they are a car derived van, but would be over 2 tonnes so would be in the slower bracket.
Windows makes you go faster (only time that can be said).
Current Transit: Mk8 tourneo Sport with go faster stripes.

Long time sold: Mk5 LWB 190, 2.5di banana SHR, 3 seats, SLD, Twin rear doors (rusted bottoms), manual locking & windows.

I was wrong though:

So the new disco is limited to 60 on dual carrigeways? Can't see many sticking to that!

But what is the Discovery? Is it a car or goods vehicle? cars surely can go up to 3.5 tonnes.

The MOT is supposed to be a 'road worthiness test'. The information you have should be forwarded to the national press so a public backlash has the opportunity to prevent its implementation.

If it wasn't for people 'in the know' sharing advance information, each one of us would have spent over £100 on a national identity card by now!

But it is law to have the correct spacing on number plates. And at the moment a cracked number plate is a failure because it is not deamed reable. Most of these funny plates can't be read.

thats exactly right what you've said - some of these funny plates can't be read but to satsify the test regulations the minimum requirement is

the letters and figures have to be of uniform width throughout their whole length, the spacing has to be correct and it has be to readable from 20 metres

they also have to be secure but the test doesn't even cover the correct colour of the plates so a 2004 focus with grey on black number plates will still pass if it satisfies the above

so at the moment fonts are not covered or colours so it needs to be updated - and this is a problem for ANPR equipment

a car with defective number plates is in unroadworthy condition - it's an offence not to have the correct number plates fitted (size colour fonts etc)

forget the MOT test regs, they're irrelevant, they're a minimum requirement for roadworthiness and sometimes we have no choice but to pass and advise on some items that a police officer could stop you and nick you for even while driving away from the test station - number plates being a prime example

too many people think the MOT test is the test for roadworthiness - it's not, it's a minimum requirement as laid down by VOSA - if it covered everything your test would take all day and cost you about £500 instead of £50

Would my number plates pass or would I have to get new ones made up when my van is due an MOT? They are legal size and font.

they would fail - the spacing is wrong - you need the space between the numbers and letters (for MOT purposes the year letter counts as a number)

The size/colour/font of a number plate doesn't make it roadworthy. A loose number plate is unroadworthy, a cracked/broken number plate is unroadworthy, but having a plate with letters too close together doesn't make it unroadworthy.

There is a very major difference between illegal and unsafe & thats why what you are proposing here should have nothing to do with the MOT (which is first & foremost a roadWORTHINESS test).

Incidentally, what does the law say about positioning of a number plate? For example, a lot of motorcycle plates face upwards making them very clear to Gatso's. My plate faces down (thanks to the wedges I placed behind them). They look fine when you see them straight on, but they can't be read from a Gatso. They're also handy in case the OB decide to point a laser device at my vehicle & aim for the number plate
