Cambelt pulley bolt torque 2.0 ecoblue

Postby Reddiamonduk » Fri Apr 05, 2024 2:37 pm

Does anyone know the tightening torque for the bottom cambelt pulley on the 2.0 ecoblue engine.
It started to rattle and then stopped completely within 20 seconds whilst driving.

rattle on start up could be normal for drained oil pump or if you've done major work on it dismantling oil system. otherwise not good

not sure how cambelt tensioner works on these , if it were a chain system you'd have a hand grenade type pin to pull out of the tensioner.

The only issue i can see is ..you have to have a huge breaker bar to do up the nut on the crank. as you can see : 3/4 drive ..possibly with extension on it for final pulls
Stage 1 20nm
Stage 2 40nm
Stage 3 90 degrees
Stage 4 90 degrees again
Stage 5 90 degrees a final time)

So from stage 4 takes considerable force to do ..so you need very hefty 3/4 drive socket and breaker bar.

There is no keyway on the crank pulley ..hence the tightening sequence with new nut.

the new nut will probably have a built in washer or washer with diamond dust impregnated into it. one time use only

You can't re-use the timing cover, the sump will have to come off to replace the wet type oil pump belt.

Thanks but it's not the crankshaft pulley. The crankshaft drives an idler pulley that the cambelt is driven from, it's the idler pulley bolt that I need the torque settings for as mine snapped whilst driving so I have to replace it.

I've looked everywhere online but can't find it. I even asked Ford when I bought the new bolt but they said they can't access the setting unless the job is booked in with them

well the only thing you can do then is ID the bolt grade

https://www.dgmfmoldclamps.com/wp-conte ... o.-Ltd.jpg

according to the first pic you posted its 10.9

see here on the max torque that bolt is permitted...you must measure the bolt thread diameter (shank) not the bolt head, eg .. m20 has 20mm shank

https://fractory.com/metric-bolt-torque-chart/

read here more about bolt toques and how to work out a fair torque for it

https://www.dgmfmoldclamps.com/what-are ... lt-grades/

It's bolt HB1 in this diagram.
You are correct it is a 10.9 bolt, thanks for those links, it looks like I'll be working it out from there as I don't think it's actually listed anywhere online.

found this ..still isn't listed

but different 9 stage crank bolt tightening - assuming you have a 300Nm torque wrench.

https://www.vinnybyrne.com/view_pdf.php ... 251429.pdf

Stage 1: Tighten to 10 Nm.
Stage 2: Slacken 60°
Stage 3: Tighten to 20 Nm.
Stage 4: Tighten to 70 Nm.
Stage 5: Tighten to 150 Nm.
Stage 6: Slacken 90°
Stage 7: Tighten to 100 Nm.
Stage 8: Tighten to 300 Nm.
Stage 9: Tighten by 90°

Yeah I saw that, NINE f*cking stages to tighten a crank bolt, what were they thinking when they decided on that ffs

My broken bolt happened 4 weeks after changing the cambelt, but you don't even need to remove that pulley so I never checked that bolt.

Stage 1- 60nm
Stage 2- Loosen 90deg
Stage 3- 20nm
Stage 4- 45nm
Stage 5- 45deg

For a standard bolt according to the Ford manual.

Sounds like the thin sprung wheel has come off the back of the idler pulley when you changed your wet belt. The thin wheel can rattle around behind the idler pulley until it goes behind it and breaks the bolt. There’s another sprung wheel behind the fuel pump wheel that will be loose now as well.

If the idler wheel has broken off while you were driving chances are your engine is going to be pretty badly damaged by the pistons hitting the valves.

Good morning guys.

The camshaft belt gear bolt has recently broken on mine after i replaced the timing belt.

This is something know to Ford so i would advise you get in touch to your local Ford dealer so they can raise a GCR (global concern report)

The more cases raised the the more Ford engineering will look into the fault.

Good morning.

This has recently happen to my 2l ecoblue after replacing the timing belt.

This is a known concern with the timing gear pulley bolt breaking.

You need to contact you local for dealer and get them to raise a GCR (Global concern report)

The more Ford are aware of the quicker and more likely Ford engineering will look in to it.
