Synchro or Selector problems - Advice sought

Postby ozzie_traveller » Mon Apr 07, 2025 11:42 am

G'day team ... May I ask for some ideas from the experts here :)

VH Transit - 2003/4 - 5-sp manual box - 500k+ kms x 20+ yrs of Aussie driving

I am experiencing some 'funny' responses from the gearbox and I am wondering what to do about it

Overall performance ...
= there is no grinding of gears, the bearings are not singing or whining, that part of things seems 'real beaut mate'

but-
I am told that the gear selection system is via cable, not linkage, and I do not know enough to know whether this is the problem zone, or the actual synchro setup is failing

Sometimes it refuses to go into 1st at traffic lights, but will after a shove
Sometimes it needs to be forced to go into 2nd when in traffic, or reverse when stationary
Sometimes it does not like going from 4th to 5th, with the gear-stick feedback feeling as though the gear lever has not slid into the slot it has gone home to for the last 20+ yrs

But it's only 'sometimes' ... the rest of the time it's easy and wonderful to drive ... so what is going on I am left to wonder
Any thoughts?

Many thanks in advance
Phil

You've not told us whether FWD or RWD.?? Only the FWD has the cable shift setup, RWD has direct shift linkage to top of box.

When was the clutch last replaced..?? Difficult shifting can often be caused by a poorly clutch. When was the gearbox oil last replaced..??

Okay - RWD ... new clutch fitted about 80k kms ago ... Box oil unknown, I'll have to search the maint'ce dockets

How about the DMF flywheel..?? They can cause grief too....unless you have a solid flywheel.

The MT-75 RWD has in the past had issues with the clutch slave pushrod unseating itself...in rare cases the lever inside the bell housing can even bend a little.

G'day fellas

Thank you for the previous replies and info
May I ask the same question in a different way? ...

=IF= the synchro was 'playing up' ... what signs & symptoms would I be experiencing?

Thanks

Failing sychro rings usually give "graunchy/crunchy" gear changes....due to the gear engagement dogs not being synchronized....hence the "synchro" name.
