That damn MK7 ball joint

Postby Amateur91 » Wed Apr 08, 2026 6:44 pm

Hello everyone,

We're currently facing issues with the replacement of the ball joints of my dad's MK7. We've heated it, hammered it, my dad even went so far as to angle-grind off the ball, leaving only the "husk", but it still won't budge.

To be fair, we shied away from loosening the axle so far, we were hoping that taking off the wishbone alone would be sufficient. But I'm starting to feel loosening all axle-related parts for better accessibility is necessary. Is there something else we should/could consider or we have to be mindful of?

Thank you so much

There are specialists tools you can use on it to push it out.
you can drive it out with an impact hammer
or buy the kit of tools to push it out
but when they are as hard as you describe,, you need to take the knuckle off and you need a floor press .
and there has never been a better time to get one at a good price

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/197905980552?

Note: usually
.. you will click on this .. but at the bottom of the listing will be an even cheaper one exactly the same model .. ebay does not tell you the truth with the lowest price these days.

all the best.mark
