2.2 RWD engine mount replacement

Postby Sam123 » Mon Sep 14, 2026 12:00 pm

I'm planning to change the engine mounts on my 2015 2.2 RWD 2.2 Jumbo, that's the lower mount that sit on the cross member.

I've heard that the cross member is a pain to remove because the bolts rust into the chassis rails. Does anyone know if I can replace the mounts with the cross member in-situ, i.e., by lifting the engine a few inches up from the cross member? I've seen Americans talking about doing in this way on YT, but that's always with different engines.

Thanks

Yes large block of wood under the sump pan .. then jack it up.. then probably struggle to access it from underneath .. most youtube vids probably have it on a ramp/ lift .. so will be easy looking at them doing it. only lift it enough to get the mount out.

all the best.mark

assuming you can get into the nuts that hold the mount on then jack it up block of would under the sump, do a side at a time if its possible to get enough clearance to do so ....just in case of mishaps and its connected at one side ,
not sure if America run 2.2 in the mk8s but probably same idea

Thanks for replies both.

I've just done the job, and it is possible to replace the engine mounts without dropping the cross member. The passenger side one (UK RHD) is easy enough, there's just enough clearance. But the drivers side is horrible. You have to get the engine into the perfect position to just about find the clearance. Main blocker seems to be the EGR valve hitting the bulkhead, so maybe if you removed that first it'd be easier.

You'll need two trolley jacks, particularly for the drivers side. There's not enough clearance to just jack one side of the engine at a time, you need to at least partially lift the opposite side.

Also, on the new (genuine Ford made by Corteco) mounts that I bought, the locating bolt was a good 10mm+ longer than on the old mount, which was already oversized. And there's no way you'll get that back in on the drivers side. So I shortened it by probably 12mm to get it in.

tbh, if I was doing it again, I'd probably just bite the bullet and drop the cross member, but you'll need new bolts for that, and be prepared to spend a couple of hours getting the old bolts out.
