Mk2 Engine Change to a 2.5 diesel. No Idea what I'm doing

Ok no worries i will have a hunt about for you, how much do you want to spend? i will try get him to throw it in free as i will prob be spending at least a ton but just in case i dont know what its worth?

A standard unpopular steer wheel shouldn't be much, I want it for the recovery truck as they don't look bad on the Mk1 and are much more durable than the Mk1 wheel. If you want to swap yours I could offer you a 2 spoke phase2 one.

Not sure on the swap tbh but will bear in mind it should be dirt cheap, like i say if i find one i will try get it for nothing

the estate isn't mine, the Mk2 granny and Mk5 tina are. And much as I would like a 3 spoke Mk2 steering wheel, I don't think I will be swapping them!

After all the talk (6 months on this thread), I finally pulled my engine out and replaced it today with a 2.5 - I've attached a piccy - so if anyone can identify the new lump for me - that would be a start! Hopefully I haven't made a serious mistake with the purchase.



The gearbox that the letters 'VT88' stamped on it, so If anyone has any comments on what the hell I've just stuffed in my van, that would be excellent!

I still need to attach everything (including the cross member & prop) which I still have to find, and I seem to have a load of wires that don't connect in the same way that the previous engines wires did.... but aside from that ... it's getting there. Thanks to everyone that replied to my previous posts which gave me the confidence to tackle this thing in in the 1st place!

I've now sussed that I've got a 2.5DI with a non MT75 gearbox out of a Mk3. I now have some new questions!

1/ The g/box cross member from the Mk3 doesn't simply bolt on to my Mk2 as I hoped as the alignment holes are well out. I'll have to make up a bracket and attach it somehow, my question is - I make the assumption that the plate that attaches to the prop has to be completely horizontal to avoid any nasties happening, but does it have to be mounted a specific distance from the ground?

2/ Is there any chance that a standard LWB prop from a Mk3 will match up a LWB Mk2, or are the distances different? My Mk2 2.4 Yorkie prop had 2 pieces, whereas the Mk3 LWB seems to have a 3 piece. I haven't been able to locate a local non damaged prop as yet to test.

3/ Finally, the alternator from a 2.4 Yorkie has a spade connector which attaches to several wires, whereas the Mk3 2.5DI alternator only has 2 wires - positive and negative connectors. It also has an input and output from the brake servo and also a hose to the engine whatever that may be for. I'd like to use the Mk3 alternator but have no idea if I can simply connect all the wires from the spade connector directly to the positive. Has anyone got any ideas before I make a serious error!!!!!

The gearbox sounds like a type9, is it cast iron? Not good, they are not a reliable one in a transit. On the other hand the type9 should bolt up without any mods, even to the floor. Could be wrong cos it's been many years since we had a type9. Was glad to see the back of em after one went bang in the middle of Germany without prior warning.....

Actually, to be honest, I've no what idea what gearbox it is! Going on mountings, it looks like the one that's being offered on ebay - item number: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/180258475758 and also item number https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/190233480709. Anys ideas?

They are MT75s, the clue is what they are made of. From a picture I can tell these are made of ally. I didn't say what gearbox do you think it is, I said what is it made of.

simple to detect if its a mt75 or type 9 ,i thourt you would know this fred! if the gearstick has 2 bolts to it at the base of the stick its a mt75 ,if its got a solid gearstic and is fitted from the bottom its a type 9 !
have a look fred and you will see!
